This is an essay giving an outline of a research to be conducted on the effect of sleep on the academic performance of the participants. The outline looks at the possible literature review, the hypothesis of the research that is to be conducted, the variables that will be use is also looked into and the methods of data collection that will e use as well as analysis is discussed in the essay.
¶ … human science sources and human behavior related articles and literature. There will be a deep analysis of what had been written about the sleep trends and the activity of the human brain, the optimum sleep hours required for optimum performance. Some of the search terms that will feature in this research literature will be cognitive ability (Thoracic Sleep Group, 2010) to refer to the extent to which the various participants are able to recognize concepts and imbibe them. Wakefulness is yet another term that will feature to refer to the ability and the duration that participants are able to comfortably pay attention to academic issues in class or library. Sleep deprivation (Steadyhealth, 2007) is yet another term that will be predominantly used in this case to refer to the lack of sleep hours that are equal to the average sleep hours that will have been calculated from the collected data in the research.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis in this case will be that there is a relationship between getting enough sleep and performing well at school. The better the student gets quality and sufficient sleep, the better the concentration during the school hours hence boosting the concentration of the student and in return performing well in all that is school related.
Variables
The variables in this situation will be two, the independent variable which will be the sleep, which in this research will be changed in terms of hours that the different subjects will be subjected to, the length of the sleep hours will be varied and the outcome in terms of academic performance will be analyzed. The dependent variable will be the performance of the student in academics that will be monitored with the variation of the independent variable.
Methodology
Being that it is a study that ahs to do with change in quality of human output, there will be need to have volunteer participants and the collection of data be done through observation.
The participants will be drawn from high schools students from two different schools so that the analysis of the data is more objective. There will be a random sample of five students drawn from each grade of each school. They will be asked at the onset to indicate their sleeping and waking schedule. It is from this that the sample will be verified to be satisfactory or not with a view to having a sample whose sleeping times are significantly varied. If the initial sample unit has the same sleeping time pattern or a pattern that is not highly varied, then a second random sample will be taken.
The data will be collected from the participants through two major means. The first will be the filling in of the sleep schedule that will be given to the participants who will be indicating their commencement of sleep and waking time over a period of one full year. The second data type will be the performance trend that can only be obtained through observation of the results at the end of each session from the respective offices with the prior permission from the participants.
The participants will first be fully briefed of the intention of the research and the process explained to them openly so that they are able to give the authentic data that will guide the research. The performance of the students before the commencement of the research will not be taken into account since the data of their sleep was not known hence the observation of the performance will commence from the time the participants will have agreed to participate. The participants will then be issued with sleep schedules that they will be filling in, the reading pattern of the participants will not be influenced in any manner and the participants will be allowed to carry on their academic activities just as other students who are non-participants.
