Ethical behavior in the context of Bob Filner's sexual harassment charges

There is much controversy concerning San Diego Mayor Bob Filner on account of the public official being accused of having sexually harassed several of his employees. While Filner claims to be innocent and believes that his current condition resulted from a series of rumors involving unspecified individuals. In spite of the fact that several female staff initially preferred to remain anonymous, evidence seemed credible and Filner was called out to respond to these allegations. Filner apparently abused his position and attempted to exploit female employees he was in charge of thinking that he would escape without being penalized as a result of this act.

Some of the former Mayor's supporters held a conference on July 11, 2013 announcing that Filner had sexually harassed them and that they demanded his resignation. This led to a series of other allegation coming from a wide range of women who had interacted with Filner while he was a public official. While Filner accepted to quit his position as a result of the scandal ensuing with more and more of his female subordinates blaming him for sexually harassing them, the fact that he did not acknowledge his guilt shows that he does not actually feel remorse. The reality is that Filner's actions have directly discriminated his female subordinates and have emphasized the fact that his leadership did not accept the idea of equality of opportunity.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 says that no employee can be discriminated on account of his or her gender. The fact that Filner's actions generated a lot of criticism as a series of women came to accuse him means that he created sexually hostile environments and that it would be safe to say that his actions had a negative effect on society as a whole. Several female employees that he interacted with were aware that not cooperating could result in losing their jobs and thus felt that they had little to no options but to yield to his pressures (Wicks).
