For one to take fate into his/her hands is an act of self-assertiveness. For one to do so and claim responsibility for the faiths of entire troops and units is the burden of proof for bravery. When such men and such women choose to take the helm and lead the nation's destiny as entrusted to them by the very latter, this is devotion and glory. The people in the military forces are the above. These are the people who must never be forgotten, those who are no longer with us and the living. The purpose of this essay is to stress the importance of military birthday celebrations because military birthdays do not only give the civil society the opportunity to evoke military accomplishments and decisive events in the life of military branches but offer the privilege to celebrate collectively the people who enforced the above.

In the United States, the military service is comprised of the Army, the Marine Corps, the Air Force, the Navy, the National Guard, and the Coast Guard. In a chronological order, the Air Force is the newest branch of the U.S. military service and the Army, the oldest and, by far, the numerous. The U.S. Army was born on 14 June 1775 and except the core values that soldiers are united by, time transcended, the organization and the structure was nothing similar to the Army today. When the Continental Congress enacted the participation of more companies to battle English forces, it did so with "no real authority to pay for them." (Gen. Kroesen, 2013, p. 1) Soldiers, with feet uncovered, deprived of sufficient food and decent living conditions, marched nonetheless resiliently and, to this day, resilience is what defines the U.S. Army. As commander-in-chief, George Washington, who went on to become the first president of the U.S., led the nation's "army" to victories and accomplishments. In 1775 also, on 13 October, the Continental Congress also established a naval force hoping to balance "an uncontested exercise of British sea power" (Palmer, n.y., par. 3) but it did not resolve at that moment to enforce the Continental Navy with any other purpose other than, considering the British trade at sea, putting a spoke in their wheel. John Paul Jones, the first commander, is now regarded as the "founding father of the United States Navy," (Blythe, 2008, n.p.) having set the foundation for what it is distinguished by today, professionalism and courage. That very same year, on 10 November, two battalions of Marines were asked to serve the newly enforced Continental Navy. The man celebrated as the first commandant of U.S. Marines is Captain Samuel Nichols who, in 1776, dominated the British in New Province Island, Bahamas. It was not until 1798 however, when the Navy received its official status that the Marine Corps were also enforced as a permanent military branch under the U.S. Navy and its motto has since remained "Always Faithful." The Coast Guard celebrates its birthday on 4 August when, in 1790, President Washington authorized the act by which vessels called then "cutters" were to be built in order to protect trade and prevent smuggling. Coastguards have never failed to remain vigilant and watchful since they were first called to duty centuries ago and have remained as faithful to their mission as Alexander Hamilton himself, then, head of the service, was. To fly and fight turned from a concept into reality in 1947 when the Air Force was born. On September 18, the National Security Act ensured the USAF as an independent branch of the military service. Stuart Symington became the first secretary of the Air Force, enforcing the status of the service. It should be stated however that the oldest component of armed forces in the U.S. is the National Guard which dates from as far back as 1636, December 13, the day when civilians rose to protect towns and their loved ones. To serve community and to ensure freedom continues to define it.
