HR Circus
There a number of human resources needs for a startup circus similar to Cirque de Soleil. The organization has to source performers and creatives from around the world, so the HR department needs to be able to operate globally rather than regionally or nationally. This presents numerous logistical challenges. In addition, the human resources department needs to set out job descriptions for performers and means of evaluating output, which can be challenging in creativity-oriented fields. Another challenge for this entity will be to manage the contracts of the different employees. As most of a circus' business involves touring, the employment for most employees will be finite and managing the contract status and potential benefits, in addition to gaining national work permits, for thousands of employees is a significant challenge for HR.
The human resources department will also need to find support staff that understand the industry and can adapt to it. The corporate culture is based on creativity, but to an extent the support functions will differ little from their equivalents at other firms. This will necessitate finding people who fit the culture but are able to perform their tasks diligently.
Human resources will also have site issues that it needs to address. Because the company operates in a number of locations, including on tour, the human resources department needs to have representation at each location and on each tour in order to address any issues that may arise. The nature of the work, combined with the international workforce, means that the human resources function will need to be highly coordinated between the remote locations and the central office, which will necessitate strong information technology systems and communications flow.
The international workforce has its own challenges. In addition to the logistics (work permits, etc.) there will also be a need to break down communication barriers as the workers will speak dozens of languages and there will also be a need to address cultural issues. While the international workers are all artists, they are also from different cultures and there can be some issues that arise from that.
