Abstract

In a changing global business environment, it is important to have the opportunity to look and learn for the future. UTSA has a well-respected MBA program that matches well with my desire to use what I know about different contries to build a strong business education. This piece is my statement of why I would like to be accepted into the UTSA program.

UTSA Personal Statement

It is with great pleasure that I prepare this personal statement as part of my application to the University of Texas at San Antonio. As a recognized leader in business educational programs, UTSA represents what I like best about the possibilities of international business management: the chance to use quality and practical business applications in the growing world of global business opportunities.

I had the chance as a young person to live in two different cultures, Indonesia and Australia. Being in those countries gave me the chance to appreciate and understand more about how different people of the world see their situations. While I was very young when I lived in these locations, my family values and other travels have given me the chance to learn more about and respect the kinds of differences I feel influenced by. As such, I want to make sure that my educational goals for the future continue this awareness and allow me to work in locations that may be very different from each other.

Before discussing my future, I would like to say that I was very pleased to see that UTSA's MBA program has once again been recognized in the Southwest Bloomberg BusinessWeek rankings (as it has been for its Hispanic business programs). I was very pleased to see that the issue of academic quality helped UTSA gain this recognition, and that it was the opinions of MBA students who reflected their confidence in this. I am very interested in going to a school for graduate business work that values hands-on experience and rewards accomplishments. It is also extremely important that academic studies be tied to realistic professional and business outcomes. This is exactly what I am looking for in my graduate school experience.

The goals that I have in mind are general at this time. This is because I want to leave myself open to many possible options. But this does not mean that I do not have a sense of direction for what I would like to do. I very much do. Before I list my goals, however, I just want to say a little more about my travel experiences and how this perspective relates to my future.

There is no question but that Australia and Indonesia are extremely opposite types of countries. Australia today is very westernized and a fully developed country. I have noticed how it is interested in becoming a nation that is more involved in the creative and very innovative promises of high technology for global involvement. Their culture favors a sense of teamwork and togetherness, and yet respects people who are strong and committed to what they believe in. I like this kind of environment because I believe it inspires innovation while respecting accomplishment.

On the other hand, Indonesia is a diverse and developing Asian/Pacific Islander nation. But it is much different. In many ways it is more closed, even though it wants to be more engaged with the world too. While its urban areas are often modern and have western influences, the country is more closely tied to its ethnic and religious diversity from the past. The fact that it has a large Muslim community and that it values those beliefs and viewpoints means it will be in a good place in the future to deal with the business realities of the Middle East. I think this is important but most importantly it would give me a chance to work in very different business contexts while still staying connected to the world of the future.

I see my International Business Management goals coming from this respect for business diversity and global opportunity. But that means I have to start with a good professional foundation. I would ultimately like to be able to secure a position that not only allows me to travel between various locations, but that also ensures that I can operate in each of them well so that I might be able to even bring them closer together for business success.

My goals for my education at UTSA are focused on these expectations:

Being able to work well with and respect fellow students and instructors as we become a team of people who have a common desire for success. The high GMAT scores are a great indicator of this potential as is the fact that you many tenured business faculty members.

Having access to a great selection of courses that support specific skills for real-life work experience. UTSA is known as a great school for full and part-time students in business because it offers the kind of learning and training to enable people to advance in their career. Other schools can be more focused on theory.
