Phyllida Lloyd's film Mamma Mia! can largely be considered to be an attempt to praise the Swedish pop group ABBA, considering the numerous references that the film makes with regard to the band. From the very first moments of the motion picture viewers are provided with a prologue involving the central character, Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried), as she posts three wedding invitations with ABBA's "I Have a Dream" playing in the background. In comparison to other musicals, this film does not necessarily add music to an intriguing story with the purpose of making the respective story seem more appealing. Instead, it uses music as a tool to tell the story and makes it possible for viewers to associate feelings that the characters experience with notes in ABBA songs.

Simply listening to ABBA's songs is probably to provide viewers with the opportunity to watch the movie all over again in their minds, considering the strong connection between particular lyrics and the film's storyline. The fact that some songs perfectly connect with events in the film further contributes to the feeling that this motion picture cannot possibly be as good as it is if it would not be for the music accompanying it.

While some people are probable to consider that the film is rather cheesy as a consequence of the fact that the stars playing in it cannot possibly be compared with ABBA's members, the truth is that they actually do a good job at covering many of the Swedish band's songs. One can practically say the motion picture brought ABBA back into the spotlight by emphasizing that it is one of the best pop bands in all of history. Surely, it would be absurd to claim that the film's soundtrack would function without being accompanied by the motion picture, taking into account that the actors playing in it are not very experienced in singing. Meryl Streep is probably one of the only actors in the film who manages to provide viewers with a voice that somewhat resembles ABBA's tone. In spite of the fact that he manages to put across an impressive performance, Pierce Brosnan cannot sing and would surely fail to cover one of ABBA's singles if it were not for the film's storyline to assist him. Moreover, the camera cuts seem to be a little choppy, as cameras zoom in on actors' faces as they sing and apparently destroy a more intimate feeling that the film would normally put across. It somewhat appears that the director wants viewers to be certain that the actors are actually the ones singing and that they are not simply seeing scenes dominated by playback sequences.
