Abstract

This paper discusses Justin Bieber. He is a modern pop artist. This genre is considered very commercial and less to do with musical artistry than with profit. It goes back to the 1950s when rock and roll became popular. Parents objected to the rock music and pop came about as a conservative alternative to what was considered dirty music.

Justin Bieber

One of the most famous singers in the world right now is Justin Bieber. Still only 19 years old, this young man has earned fans in countries throughout the world. Most of his fans are young girls between the ages of 12 and 18. His sons are all considered to be pop music which is a genre which is most popular amongst girls in this age range. Bieber was discovered by another recording artist, Usher, after Bieber post videos of himself singing on the internet web site Youtube. After his discovery, he was signed to a music company and started work on his first CD. Even though he was only in his teens, Bieber became very famous very quickly. During his young life, he has recorded albums which have sold millions of copies, released a concert film called Never Say Never, and toured the globe. Everything he has done since the release of his first single, from his haircuts to his relationships, has been heavily scrutinized and criticized by his supporters and also from people who criticize him on a regular basis. Justin Bieber is a very polarizing personality; people either love him and think he is one of the greatest signers ever, or they hate him and disregard him as another teen heartthrob pop singer without an artistic aesthetic. This has been the way a lot of pop music artists have been regarded since the genre began around the 1950s and 1960s, reaching a high point in the 1990s and onward. It is likely that Justin Bieber was heavily influenced by the pop singers who came before him and this can be understood in the songs he sings and in the whole package that he presents to the outside world.

According to an interview that Justin Bieber gave in February of 2011, his influences growing up included mostly pop and R&B (rhythm and blues) musicians. Four of the musicians which he specifically named in the interview included R&B musicians Stevie Wonder, Usher, and vocal group Boys II Men. He also said that a big influence on his musical style was Michael Jackson who was known by the nickname "The King of Pop" (Jill). Michael Jackson was known for his flamboyant personality and eccentricities which came to overshadow his artistic talents. In his prime, Jackson was the number one musical artist in the world, earning hundreds of music awards and filming music videos which were highly creative. He became synonymous with catchy, well-crafted music which was widely admired. This is a very interesting choice on Bieber's part because if a person were to ask modern pop audiences who they believed to be the "king" of this genre, many would be likely to say Justin Bieber. In a way, he has taken on the position of his former idol.

Pop music as an art form goes back to the 1950s. It was an offshoot of the rock and roll movement which was becoming popular at that time. Rock and roll appealed to the teenagers of the period but was discouraged by many of their parents because of the belief that it encouraged promiscuous and rebellious behaviors. There were two types of rock and roll artists, the more sexual type such as Elvis Presley and the more wholesome type such as Pat Boone (Lamb). While Elvis sang about physical love and shook his hips, the Pat Boone type singers sang about emotional love and abstinence until marriage. The latter form began to take off in the wake of parental objections to rock and roll. If they would not let their children listen to rock and roll, then the music industry would give the teenagers something that their parents would approve of, namely pop. Since the two types of music were so different from each other, the industry started labeling the less controversial music as "popular music" of having popular appeal which became shortened over time to pop.
