OBSERVATION OF DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE:

Does the healthcare workforce reflect the faces of the community they serve?

The health care workforce is now beginning to reflect the faces of the communities in which they serve. Natural demographic changes in the United States make it necessary for the communities to reflect the changes in the underlying demographics. Hispanics are now the fastest growing population within the United States with nearly 37% of these individuals under the age of 18. The communities, in which the healthcare workforce interacts with, will undoubtedly change to reflect this demographic. Asian-Americans and African-American are also growing at a rapid interval. However, the changes have occurred in upper level management which reflects the changes in demographic composition. In addition, many of the lower level positions reflect the changes occurring in the broad macro level environment.

Is there diversity in the management team?

There is diversity on the management team; has a very high standard of diversity. Particularly with the minority population, there is much representation in regards to the management team. Diversity should be a focal point for the healthcare community, particularly as demographics change. The management team reflects this diversity in a manner that is representative of society at large.

3.) Do you believe a diverse workforce is beneficial and why?

Diversity is very beneficial to the organization overall. This is particularly true if the business is very consumer driven. Diversity allows for a more even exchange of unique and innovative solutions as they pertain to underlying business operations (Brecher, 2012). It is vital to acknowledge that diversity is not an issue of groups, but individual differentiations. Diversity in the workplace acknowledges that everybody is distinctive, and once virtues are routinely credited. A varied workforce is desired for establishments to remain up-to-date amongst modern society, particularly as globalization becomes more profound. Distinctive opinions possess information new and generate a fascinating and thought-provoking workplace that keeps individuals engaged. Bringing individuals into a workplace with diverse experiences and from different places results in notions that some would have never thought of. These new and often innovative solutions provide a competitive advantage to firms. These solutions can ultimately propel a company forward in a profitable and efficient manner. Abraham Lincoln once said, "You may be on the right track, but if you don't change tracks every now and then, you might get run over by a train." Varying business custom and everyday workflows is a wonderful method to change those tracks in a manner the best suits the company and its workforce (De Meuse, 2007).
