Voice of Ciaran:

New York became just like my Irish home during this time. The same sounds, the same smells, the same feelings. Time became fluid and ungraspable. Death, despair and hopelessness took different forms ignoring the linear nature of the unfolding of events.

I looked at my brother and thought he is not real, he is not human. Perhaps we are just dreams and images of something or someone else. Shit, I could care right now...What is past, what is now. The August heat melts away the possibilities of the future with an uncompromising glow and desperate persistence.

How does humanity survive, or better yet, why does it survive. How my brother was assigned to my realm, or me to his, underlines the utter desperateness and confusion that accompanies life and all that goes with it. Hookers, dope and dirt blanket my confusion.. Does something beautiful come next..

Times Square, Twin Towers, skyscraper jungle retransmitting the energy from human and environment into something bigger, something more pure. When does the worry leave? When does the final act come to an end? What is the purpose? Yellow taxis swerve to near misses while taking junky people to junky places, whipwhirring around like bees and flies scurrying to answer a silent call of nature. Travel and motion is needed to maintain a pace of sobriety. Keep it in motion, keep it in line, keep it in motion, make it mine. As it goes up it comes down, the truth is revealed.. leave my life alone...My poor brother...

In order to extend Ciaran's voice it is necessary to use certain literary tools to replicate his unique perspective. Throughout my example I employed several techniques that, in my opinion, accurately denote a continuation of the character.

-Alliterative techniques are used in the piece to add rhythm and pace to the selection.

-Caricature or certain exaggerations are used to help add a descriptive side to this work.

- Obvious cliche's are avoided in this work to demonstrate the personality of Ciaran

- Hyperbole is used to add or heighten emotional sensitivity to the pursuits of Ciaran
