This is illustrating how the poem is highlighting the social challenges that were faced by individuals during this time frame.
In the Modern Period there is focus on the final impact of the industrial revolution on society. A good example of this can be seen in Dulce et Decorum Est. In the poem, there is discussion about the impact of war on the individual. This is highlighting the sense of finality of this new era and the uncertainty about the future. Evidence of this can be seen in the passage that says, "If in some smothering dreams you too could pace. Behind the wagon that we flung him in, and watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; if you could heat at every jolt, the blood. To children ardent for some desperate glory" (Wilfred, n.d.) This is showing how the literature of this period is describing the carnage and terror associated with the changes in society. As a result, this will provide everyone with a basic background of understanding these ideas and the Modern Period. When the timeline is applied to the actual literature from specific periods is when there is a transformation in understanding key concepts. This is taking place in the form of readers being able to comprehend the ideas better by: relating to the emotions and feelings from contemporary society. Once this occurs, is when the readers will have a greater understanding of these events and its meaning. In the future, these ideas help them to see the world differently. Therefore, the studying of various historical events will have a dramatic impact upon the person's comprehension and interpretation of them. Those individuals, who are using history in conjunction with literature, will have more insights about their significance.
