Sexual Orientation and Openness:
The Role of the Media
It wasn't long ago that many gays and lesbians remained in the closet for most of their lives. Although there is little question that the percentage of gays and lesbians in past generations was comparable to the overall percentage within the general population today, the actual numbers of "admitted" homosexuals was much less in previous decades than those "out" today. Much of this difference can be directly attributed to the role of the media -- specifically prime-time television.
Although the story of Rock Hudson is no longer new, many consider him to be the pinnacle of the representation of the "closeted for life" gay man. Further, many also consider him to be an excellent example of the rigidity of the entertainment industry concerning issues of sexual orientation -- especially in the years during the 1950's and 60's -- not only because of his typical "type-cast" as a "uber-straight" man, but because of the almost complete lack of openly gay characters in any popular media. Not only is the entertainment media today completely different in its willingness to portray openly gay characters, but it is also both representative of an increasing openness of American culture toward gay lifestyles, as well as a direct contributor to the willingness of gay Americans to be open about their sexuality.
Of course, three of the most oft-cited prime-time shows depicting (or showcasing) openly gay characters and real-life individuals are Will and Grace, Ellen, and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Although it is admittedly a toss up as to whether these shows have prompted or are prompted by a greater societal openness regarding gay culture, the reality remains that their mere presence (and popularity) certainly paves the way for a smoother transition out of the closet for many in America.

Gender Bias in Coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics Over the past centuries, gender bias has been one of the dominant issues in the Olympic games. While there has been a noticeable increase in the women participation in the Olympic games, nevertheless media bias has been largely remarkable where men receive more media attentions than female counterparts. In the recent 2016 concluded Olympic game in Rio, media have been found using
Undoubtedly, viewers who have seen his burly frame in Miller's Crossing (1990) and Goodfellas (1990) are naturally inclined toward the perception that his "Angelo Grotti" character in the Office is a mobster and not an ordinary insurance salesman. Had a less stereotypical portrayal of the character been used for the role, the central premise of the episode would have remained largely unaffected, except perhaps highlighting the silliness of any nefarious
" (Archbishop: sex ed should teach love, not mechanics) What this suggests is that a different approach should be taken to sex education. This approach would be based on values and morals that place sex into a framework in which the responsibilities and importance of sexual activity is explained and understood. It is also of interest that the advocates of this view are of the opinion that values such as chastity
Disengagement Theory Disengagement theory was one of the earliest theories written on aging and it was formulated by Cumming and Henry in 1961. This theory states that the society should find avenues for older people to actively disengage from authority to give way for younger people to take over. Through this way, the society creates a smooth transition for the younger generation to take over the active roles while the elders
This is really an unfair assumption that only physically attractive (i.e. sexually attractive) people have real value, but it is an assumption that has been around for a very long time. Likely, it will not change any time soon, and there is a chance that it will never change. There will always be at least a segment of society that values appearance over everything else, just as there are
SEXUALITY IN SCHOLARLY & POPULAR MEDIA Sexuality in Scholar & Popular Media The author of this report has been asked to review articles regarding sexuality. Two articles were selected in total with one appearing in a scholarly journal while the other appeared in a more mainstream and non-academic periodical. While one medium of communication and media is not necessarily superior to the other, is still beyond question that the standards, aims and
