Effects Of Corporal Punishment and Psychological Treatment on Students’ Learning and Behavior
Research Question
What are the effects of corporal punishment and psychological treatment on students’ learning and behavior?
Importance (why would other researchers be interested in the study?)
Other researchers would be interested in the study because it offers vital information on the impact of corporal punishment on students’ performance. There is contention if we need to bring back punishment in schools to tame ill behavior. Therefore, using the results of this study, we can see that corporal punishment increases instead of reducing or correcting unhealthy behavior. Researchers interested in learning more about student behavior will find this study informative because they will understand why some students have good behaviors and perform exceptionally and others struggle. Using the study results, researchers can push for improvements in the education sector where more emphasis would be placed on psychological treatment over punishment.
Hypotheses
H1: Corporal punishment corrects negative behavior, whether or not corporal punishment reinforces positive behavior (Arif & Rafi, 2007).
H2: Teachers’ classroom-strategies failure is the basic cause of school violence; that is to say, whether or not a wrongful classroom strategy creates a negative attitude among students, which shows itself in violence (Arif & Rafi, 2007).
H3: CPG scholastic performance is better than PTG; that is to say, whether or not the Corporal Punishment Group scholastic performance is better than the Psychological Treatment Group (Arif & Rafi, 2007).
Design & Variables
Design: Experimental
Independent Variables: Corporal punishment and psychological
Treatment.
Number of participants (n=-)
32 students of grade X
Materials & Measures
Observation of the students after being awarded either corporal punishment or psychological treatment (Arif & Rafi, 2007). Observation involves watching the students’ behavior and noting down different behavior displays.
School tests are administered to gauge the impact of either corporal punishment or psychological treatment.
Brief Description of Procedure
The students were grouped into two groups of 16 students each. One group was assigned corporal punishment and the other psychological treatment. The group assignment was done based on pre-test I and pre-test II (Arif & Rafi, 2007). The researcher collected data through eliciting targeted behavior, observing the students, and recording the observations by administering tasks and monitoring the different situations. The researchers also controlled for the potential influence of other variables. The students were observed for six months. The pilot study selected two students from the same grade based on their equivalent grades in an English Literature & Grammar test. The two students were punished due to their low grades and continued friction. One of the students left school, and the other was given psychological treatment (Arif & Rafi, 2007). The results of psychological treatment indicated improvement in his behavior and learning.
