Joining Professional Organizations

The significance of professional organizations as far as career growth and professional development are concerned cannot be overemphasized. One of the important benefits of joining a professional organization is that it enhances one's professional network. For anyone aspiring to climb the career ladder, building professional relationships is crucial. Joining a professional association enables one to connect with their peers, particularly during events held over the course of the year as well as discussion boards and chat groups. Connecting with peers facilitates the sharing of ideas, keeping up with developments in one's profession, as well as mentorship.

Joining a professional association also increases one's exposure to career opportunities. Professional organizations often have job opportunities reserved only for their members. Being a member of a professional organization is, therefore, a great way of finding job vacancies in one's field of interest. Furthermore, most professional organizations provide career resources to their members, especially with regard to cover letter and resume writing, job hunting techniques, how to answer interview questions, as well as career seminars. Being a member of a professional organization also makes one more attractive to employers. Other benefits of joining a professional association include greater access to scholarly information relevant to the profession, increased access to scholarship opportunities, as well as more opportunities for improvement of one's leadership skills. Five organizations that I can join include the American Accounting Association (ACA), the National Society of Accountants (NSA), the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Though each of the five associations may be unique in its own way, they have three aspects in common with regard to purpose, meetings, and membership.
First, each of the five associations aims to mould the future of the accounting profession via research, teaching, networking, outreach, and advocacy. In essence, the associations seek to advance the knowledge of accounting amongst its members, meet members' professional needs, shape national discourses relating to accounting, foster professional excellence, and advocate for adherence to professional ethics. Each association also provides significant benefits to its members, especially with respect to professional certification as well as access to accounting publications, job opportunities, professional development resources, mentorship, professional guidance, peer networks, as well as discounts on insurance and other financial services.
