Businesses rely on Organizational Development in order to pull themselves out of slumps and maintain a sense of activity and productivity within the market environment. The concept of Organizational Development focuses on the study and understanding of change factors that lead to successful development steps. It is an area of study that can provide executives with a powerful stance in their position of facilitating organizational change.

Development can mean a lot of things, yet in terms of Organizational Development it is the act of planning and implementing strategies for progressing. The concept of Organizational Development relies on planning as a major foundation for future success (Rouda & Kusy, 1995). Planning is even important in generating interventions to hinder potentially damaging factors impacting the overall success of the change activity planned. Moreover, the frame for inclusion of Organizational Development revolves around designing a major change that will impact the organization as a whole. Essentially, change activities involved in OD focus "on the total system" (Rouda & Kusy, 1995). Such change activities are planned by the top and managed by the top as well. They aim to improve the productivity. Here, the research describes it as being "tied to the bottom-line" (). As such, it is a progressive step in a more active organization.

Many have worked to better understand the concept of how organizations change in order to harness the power of successful solutions to facilitate future positive change. By combining aspects from multiple academic genres, the study of Organizational Development (OD) takes a very systematic approach at understanding what definable factors involved in organizational change and how they each contribute to the overall progression of Organizational Development in a positive direction. Understanding the factors within change and how the correlate with one another helps give executives tools for more powerful strategies in invoking change within any particular organization. Understanding how the factors relate together helps executives understand the relationships between change variables. This then allows them to focus on the more successful combinations of variables when designing and planning the change to come within the premeditated effort to move the organization from its current stance into a more progressive path.
