¶ … Incandescent Light Bulb

In order to meet Congress requirements (Energy and Security Act (2007)), Philips Lighting, a Dutch electronic company, produced a better halogen incandescent

Light bulb that uses 30% less energy, and which lasts three times longer than ordinary bulbs. They are an improvement over other bulbs in that other bulbs waste 90% of their energy in the form of lost heat. The example of the company here is an illustration of 'Relative Advantage' where they were able to offer something that is an improvement over previous products and was desired by the government of the time (Mouzoon, 2011).

Protecting workers from poisonous vinyl chloride

It was discovered in 1974 that vinyl chloride (PVC) a type of plastic likely caused a rare and fatal caner among manufacturing workers. The largest PVC manufacturer, BF Goodrich, soon came out with a containment system that prevented vinyl chloride from coming into contact with PVC workers. As a results of the easiness -- the level of compatibility -- with which this innovation was absorbed into the individual's life and its simplicity and trialability (it was simple to use) -- Goodrich was successful and the company ended up signing licensing agreement for its containment technology with six corporations as well as expanding to other plants. Not only did the innovation shield workers from the lethal chemical, but also it was also more efficient thus proving Roger's additional point of 'Relative Advantage' (Mouzoon, 2011).

Take one tablet and it will call me in the morning

A new 3G-enbaled tablet from Independa has a touch screen device with communication hub that reminds users of everything that they need to know from appointments to their medication schedule. It also lets family, friends, and caregivers check in from an online dashboard.

Aside form saving people from anguish and concern and potentially saving many lives as well as preventing illnesses from aggravating, the pill also provides one-touch access to email, video calls, and all other services including games. One of the most important factors, however, is the possibility of social support that this pill provides people who need it most.

Prompted to be released in 2011, the impact of this innovative pill is too early to tell. Success, according to Rogers, will depend on its complexity or simplicity and on its trialability, namely on how easily the innovation may be experimented with as it is being adopted and on how easy it is for the user to use and adopt. If it is too intimidating and too unfamiliar, the innovation may not catch on as expected.

3. Apple Inc. kicks off 2008 with bold new innovations

In 2007, Apple achieved a smashing year with its barrage of innovations to the extent that it was named one of the top 20 innovators of the Innovation Index. Amongst other products, it produced the MacTops laptop, the iPod touch, and video-playing iPod nano digital media player. It did so by focusing on its consumers - teenagers and young adults -and appreciating their needs whilst maintaining its reputation of energetic, unbridled innovator. Here we see various lessons that include "Relative Advantage" (Rogers, 1962): Apple's continuous attempts to improve their innovations. We also see the need for energy, open-mindedness, keeping in touch with the market's needs, and flexibility (amongst other important characteristics of innovators).
