Comparative Analysis of Three Narrative Study Dissertations
This analysis compares three dissertations that used a narrative study methodology. Each dissertation addresses different phenomena, but they share a common methodology. The comparative analysis reveals much about how this method can be applied.
Dissertation 1: \\\\\\\"The introduction of a qualitative perspective in advanced psychological research training: Narrative of a mixed methods doctoral dissertation\\\\\\\" by Bogard & Wertz (2006)
This study by Bogard and Wertz (2006) uses a mixed-methods approach but emphasizes a narrative regarding methodology dissertation research. The phenomenon under study is the development of qualitative research methods in advanced psychological research training. The study is set in an academic and research training environment where the focus is on advanced psychology. Data was collected through personal reflections and written narratives about the research process, along with interviews with participants in the research program. The study follows a reflective approach where the experiences of researchers and participants were documented and analyzed. The analysis was conducted through thematic coding and narrative synthesis. The turning point was the recognition of the value of qualitative research in psychological training, and in making connections between theory and practice. The major conclusion is that qualitative methods have immense value in psychological research, because they give in-depth insight that quantitative research (i.e., statistical data) cannot really give.
Dissertation 2: \\\\\\\"A Narrative of Writing My Doctoral Dissertation\\\\\\\" by Soltani (2023)
This dissertation by Soltani (2023) uses a narrative inquiry into the gendered experiences of women doctoral students. The study focuses on the experiences of women in educational studies, examining how they navigate the dissertation process. The setting is academic institutions, with a view on the gender situation of educational doctoral programs. Soltani (2023) used narratives from interviews with women doctoral students to obtain data about their dissertation experiences. The procedures involved collecting personal stories from the participants and analyzing them for recurring themes related to gender and academic challenges. Soltani (2023) used thematic analysis to find the common challenges, such as balancing academic work and personal life, that women go through in their post-grad studies. Key turning points were the discovery of how systemic barriers impact the dissertation experience for women. The study found that gender influences the experiences of post-grad students with regard to institutional support and personal resilience.
Dissertation 3: \\\\\\\"The write of passage: Reflections on writing a dissertation in narrative methodology\\\\\\\" by Noy (2005)
This is a reflective narrative that focuses on the process of writing a dissertation using narrative methodology. The study looks at the process of writing dissertations through a narrative lens, looking at the challenges and insights gained during the process. The setting is academic, in a doctoral program focused on narrative and autobiographical research. The data for this study was collected through personal reflection, alongside interviews with other doctoral students and researchers. The study used a narrative framework where the researcher\\\\\\\'s own dissertation became the central story. Additional input from peers and mentors was included. The analysis involved dissecting the narrative process itself, and looking at the stages and struggles encountered during dissertation writing. A significant turning point was the realization of how narrative methods help in understanding the self and the research process. The study concludes that narrative methodology is a good and helpful way to explore personal and professional growth through the research process.
