Movie review -- Why did I get married?

Every year, eight friends -- four couples -- meet for a one week holyday to explore their marriages. Based on their experiences, Dr. Patricia Agnew, wrote a best selling book on marriages. At the meeting of this year however, the marriages seem tenser, and the finale of the movie is unpredictable. The characters are as follows:

Terry, husband of Diane, played by Tyler Perry

Diane, played by Sharon Leal

Patricia, played by Janet Jackson

Gavin, played by Malik Yoba, husband of Patricia

Angela, wife of Marcus, played by Tasha Smith

Marcus, played by Michael Jai White

Mike, husband of Sheila, played by Richard T. Jones, and Sheila, played by Jill Scott

While they had previously revealed happy marriages, this year's answer to the question Why did I get married? Seems more difficult to provide, as each couple faces its own hurdles. Sheila is overweight and highly religious, and her husband, Mike, is sometimes cruel towards her. Angela is a successful business woman, who often belittles her husband, Marcus, who happens to be working for her. Terry believes that Diane had abandoned him for her work and Gavin and Patricia are forced to deal with grief.

The movie is a dramedy, referring to a combination of comedy and drama, as it mixed both dramatic as well as comedic elements. The movie is set in a realistic context, without special effects or the usage of special hi-tech solutions.

Before writing, directing, and acting in the movie, Taylor Perry had written a series of plays; in fact, this movie is an adaptation of the previous play. Perry had also written and directed other movies, as well, but they were all characterized by a more somber aspect, due to their educational side. Still, Why did I get married? Preserves the educational dimension, but combines it with more film like elements, and makes it more appealing and entertaining. This feature makes the movie all educational, inspirational and entertaining.

The touch of Taylor Perry is quite obvious throughout the entire movie, but it is necessary for the viewer to be familiar with the previous works of Perry in order to identify this. The performances of the actors are quite impressive; they all seem natural and convince the audience of the reality of the characters. At the specific level of the actor performances, Janet Jackson's acting skills seem a little out of sync, but these are nevertheless improved comparative to previous films in which she had featured. Attesting to her singing skills, acting in films could suffer some improvement for the performer.

The tone of the movie is rather complex, being sometimes grave, other times amusing, and other times educational. Some examples in this sense include:

Due to Sheila being overweight, the person sitting next to her on the airplane would have been uncomfortable, so Mike, her husband, asks her to get off the plane and drive to the cabin. This scene is eloquent for the cruelty of the husband.

In a fight in the kitchen of the cabin, Angela criticizes Mike for the way in which he treats Sheila. After Angela leaves the room, Mike asks Marcus what is wrong with his wife, to which he replies: "What do you mean? It's Wednesday! Welcome to my world!"

At the dinner table, the couples discuss the decreasing duration of marriage, how people don't stay married for as long as they used to, and how the friends are unsure about their own marriages. Patricia and husband Gavin say: "You know, you never know what happens, you know? Um, but you got to be willing to do the work. We all have our days, but remember that the bottom line is we love each other. And it's the love that gets us through those days."

From the critical standpoint, the Internet Movie Database has offered it a rating of 4.6 on a scale from 1 to 10. The rate is created as a result of the votes ad rates offered by the viewers and the website does not interfere to influence the scores in either way. Also, the critics did not receive the movies as well as expected. This reaction is quite intriguing, especially since the movie presents vivid situations, which are captivating and instructive.

Still, in spite of the critical reactions, the public received the movie in a positive manner. This ultimately led Taylor Perry to create a sequel of the movie, Why did I get married too?, which was released on the screens in 2010. Expecting the same originality and unpredictability of the first Why did I get married?, the public was rather disappointed in this continuation. The critics reviews were even worse than those of the first movie.

All in all, Why did I get married? is a combination of amusing and educational elements. It is lighthearted, s well as it is complex and saddening at times. Still, the movie is worth watching due to the importance of the themes approached, the ability to generate insight, as well as entertain.
