Metric System of Measurement

Activities:
Day 1- Introduction to the metric system
The teacher will show to the class a ruler, meter stick, measuring tape, a clock, a stopwatch, bottled glasses with volume indicators in it, a market weighing scale, and a personal weighing scale.
Teacher will introduce these materials as devices that determine measurement under the metric system.
Discussion will focus on key measures in the metric system: meter (m) for length, kilogram (kg), liter (l) for volume, and second (s) for time.
Teacher will show to the whole class the conversion of meter, kilogram, volume and time units by powers of ten.
Day 2- Mystery Box: Measuring in Metrics
Teacher will prepare 3 different boxes (of varying sizes) with various items: fruits (grapes, strawberries, oranges), bottles indicative of liquid materials (labeled as "corn oil" and "milk"), and some cotton cloth.
2. In addition to the different boxes, each box will have measuring devices in it: a measuring tape, weighing scale, and stopwatch.
3. Students will be grouped into three, and each group will be assigned a mystery box.
4. Teacher will assign, per group, students who:
a. will measure the contents of the box using the measuring tape and weighing scale
b. will record all the correct measurements of all items in the box
c. will monitor how long the group accomplishes the task (timekeeper)
5. Each group will report on the results of their measuring activity.
6. Teacher and the whole class will confirm if each group's measurement per item in their respective boxes are accurate and correct.
Evaluation:
Day 1: As an exercise, students will measure, using the devices/materials brought by the teacher, various items in the classroom. Students will decide which unit of measurement is most appropriate for each item being measured. Teacher will monitor the activity in small groups, guiding the students on the appropriate measurements possible for the item they have selected in the classroom.
Closure:
Day 1: The teacher will give the students group homework, to find and measure one item appropriate for each unit of measure: meter, liter, kilogram, and second.
Day 2: As homework, the teacher will ask each members of the group to convert the key measures of the items in their mystery boxes into other units: meters to centimeters, kilogram to gram, liters to milliliters, and seconds to minutes.
