Interdisciplinary Studies
The Significance of Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies have been defined in a number of ways. Some regard interdisciplinary studies as the integration across different disciplines, and ways that integrate modes of thinking from more than one discipline. For me, interdisciplinary studies represent the ability to harmonize, analyze and synthesize the connections or links between disciplines in a coordinated and cogent way. Interdisciplinary studies require knowledge and expertise in more than one academic area of two somewhat related or subject areas that can be coherently studied and understood. The discipline moves past traditional boundaries and to allow for a more holistic approach to problem solving.
I chose Interdisciplinary studies as my major because I tend to look at situations from a number of perspective in trying to answer questions, resolve issues, and understanding situational dynamics. For me, many times a singularly minded way of looking at an issue narrows the opportunities to explore the issue in many ways to come up with the best possible solution or understanding. Being able to actively pursue interdisciplinary studies provides me with the opportunity to utilize some of my best academic skill sets, which are analysis, theory, terminology and understanding concepts.
Another reason I chose interdisciplinary studies is because I think I will be better prepared to enter the workforce having gained knowledge and expertise in more than one area. The world has become much more complex and complicated. Students graduating from college are no longer just competing against others with similar educational backgrounds. Students are competing on the world's stage, as we have become an economy and system that seems to be, in many ways, without borders. In order to be competitive on that level, you have to have skills that set you apart, and for me, interdisciplinary studies will better prepare me to compete on that level. More traditional studies are like a niche market; competing against one another in an effort to attract students. An interdisciplinary study provides a global perspective and doesn't relegate the student to just one area of expertise or specialization.
