Research Proposal: International Film 1960- Present

Critical Historical Framework and Chosen Film

The chosen film from the 1990s is ‘Seven,’ a psychological thriller, in which Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are seen in the lead roles as crime detectives. The movie is considered groundbreaking since it gave rise to other crime and police detective movies later. The imitator movies like The Bone Collector and Along Came a Spider were also some of the famous ones of this era since murders and crimes were shown more openly in the movies of this decade[footnoteRef:1]. Still, Seven is deemed fundamental not only for the psycho-thriller air that it has strongly established within the minds of the modern audience of today that has a notoriously strong and black ‘unhappy’ ending, but also in the field of aesthetics and effects to make it look real to give real feelings and emotions to the audience.  [1: Paul Bradshaw, Blood, Bodies and the Box: How \\\\\\\'Seven\\\\\\\' Changed Film and TV Forever, 23 September 2020, https://www.nme.com/features/seven-brad-pitt-morgan-freeman-david-fincher-2759534]

Thesis

1990s’ era proved more promising in its film developments, such as optimistic aesthetics and real effects in crime detective stories.

Key Points for Argument

The accessibility to the audience’s consciousness of the movie is the ley for the filmmaker that he has to master to touch the hearts of the watchers. Once the filmmaker has grasped the social functions creatively into the movie and presented it with a realistic approach using aesthetics, the freeing of imagination for the audience becomes convenient, and the watching experience becomes pleasurable[footnoteRef:2][footnoteRef:3]. This is what 1990s’ movies like Seven have done successfully, despite alongside great movies like ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’ Nevertheless, the aesthetics of the crime scene, the killings, and horrifying scenes created a stronger impact on the audience’s minds[footnoteRef:4][footnoteRef:5], even if it is watched today when film technology has advanced fifty times more than the 1990s’ era.
