ActionAid
ActionAid was started in the year 1972 as a British charity 'Action in Distress' and had a focus in educating children. By the year 1984 the organization was reaching over forty-thousand children in different areas within Asia and Africa and in a bid to expand its scope it set up affiliates in France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy and started using the name ActionAid. The year that followed saw the shift of focus from merely meeting the immediate needs of people to dealing with the root causes of poverty. The start of a major drive in the fight against HIV and AIDS was marked by the launch of AIDS Support Organization in Uganda in the year 1987. The organization expanded with every passing year in terms of the number of countries covered and the scope of services offered with an expansion of their work to comprise lobbying financial institutions and peace building and conflict resolution in Africa by the year 1998
A major historical event took place in 2003 when ActionAid International was launched and the headquarter based in Johannesburg, South Africa, currently it reaches over 25 million people based in more than 40 countries worldwide.
The organization concentrates on working with poor people, local partners, and organizations to combat poverty and at the same time lay emphasis in fighting the causes of poverty, not just the consequences with priorities in food rights, education, emergencies, HIV and AIDS, governance, and women and girls
Structure and Funding
ActionAid International has its secretariat and head office in Johannesburg, South Africa and is registered in the Hague as an Association. It has both affiliate members and associate members which comprise of organizations that are willing to join and own ActionAid International and also accept to accomplish the Vision, Mission, Strategies, Values, Systems, and Standards of the very organization
. The organization has a partnership development team which is devoted to sustaining the affiliation with donor governments and multilateral agencies, consultancies and institutes, it also works with foundations whose headquarters are in the United States
Its funds are obtained from various governments who are ready to donate for their activities, and official institutions and agencies. This organization has no political affiliation or bias and the only way it gets involved with governments is when campaigning for change of rules and regulations that aggravate poverty.
International Center for Trade Union Rights
History and purpose
This is an autonomous round-table for discussion and debate among various professionals including labor lawyers, trade unionists, and academics all over the world. ICTUR is an organization that was instituted in the year 1987 and brings together labor lawyers, unionists, reporters, and academics. Since its formation it has set up national committees in every continent and a global network of its members. It should be noted that this is a non-profit making organization and has the sole responsibility of protecting, improving and defending the rights of its members worldwide.
The main aims of this organization include defending and extending the rights of trade unions, and gather information and raise awareness of trade union rights and their infringements. This organization came as an answer to the cry of many unions with regard to the infringement of their rights by employers which include legal threat and violence. it's accreditation in 1993 came as a result of the recognition of its importance in defending the rights of trade unions and their members.
Structure and Funding
Given that this organization deals with issues affecting its members worldwide, it has affiliations in all continents and thus runs several branches in various countries, it also carries out corporate campaigns globally. The primary funding of ICTUR is through the affiliation fees from members, individuals, and non-governmental organizations, in addition to the incomes generated through sales, subscriptions and other revenues made from the organization's journal, International Union Rights. In order to function effectively, the organization work together with trade unions and non-governmental organizations in different parts of the world.
