Interview Supply Chain

Interview with a Supply Chain Manager

The line of business, mission, and goals of the organization he/she works for.

Describe these briefly.

The purchasing manager that I talked to worked for Aerojet Rocketdyne. It is an extremely high tech business that operates in a competitive industry.

The company's mission is as follows (Aerojet Rocketdyne, N.d.):

Aerojet Rocketdyne is a world-recognized aerospace and defense leader providing propulsion and energetics to the space, missile defense, strategic, tactical missile and armaments areas in support of domestic and international markets. GenCorp is a leading technology-based manufacturer of aerospace and defense products and systems with a real estate segment that includes activities related to the entitlement, sale, and leasing of the company's excess real estate assets. Since the company was founded in 1942, it has led the way in the development of crucial technology and products that have kept America strong and furthered human's exploration of space.

2. The description of his/her job functions and job responsibilities, educational background, professional experiences, personal challenges, job achievement, and fulfillment.

The purchasing individual that I spoke with at Aerojet had completed a MBA at the University of Tennessee before accepting his position with the company. His essential job functions include the following items:

60% Identification of sources and procurement of components, subassemblies, chemicals, and services which may include procurement of hazardous, acutely hazardous and energetic type materials. Duties will include preparation of solicitations, proposal receipt and evaluation, simple negotiations when applicable, and issuance of formal Purchase Orders, Notice of Awards and Letter Subcontracts.

20% Monitor Supplier performance and assure timely delivery of requirements to meet customer needs.

10% Achieve Aerojet Jonesborough's goals in the identification, use and reporting requirements associated with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE).

10% Kanbans, Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), and barcoding systems. May include program, overhead and facilities support activities. May include direction of other employees as appropriate and required.

He says that the position is very challenging because of the type of industry that he works in. Sourcing raw materials, especially hazardous materials, has many regulations that must be met. Another challenge is that he must balance price with reliability. He said sometimes forming a long standing relationship is more important than saving a few bucks here and there.

3. The operational and strategic objectives of the supply and purchasing department.

The buyer must report all of his purchasing decisions to the contracts manager and the focus for the department is primarily on quality. Given the industry, all of the components and raw materials sourced must be of the highest quality in the industry.
