Bill de Blasio was able to win his second term as Mayor of New York city tonight. The victory marks the first time since Ed Koch was mayor in the 1980’s that a Democrat won consecutives terms in the city (Neuman and Goodman).
De Blasio gave a speech for his victory at the Brooklyn Museum. Among other things, he lauded his victory as a return to the progressive politics characteristic of his political party.
For the web version there should be links to Ed Koch’s terms and to de Blasio’s victory party. A good sidebar would detail the democrats other than Koch who won successive terms.
Print Story
De Blasio made good on his promise to win consecutive terms with his re-election Tuesday night. As the hype around a democratic re-election for the first time since Ed Koch was re-elected subsides, he’ll have tough questions to address for his second term.
During his acceptance speech De Blasio acknowledged he’ll have to continue working on bridging the gap between the rich and the poor in the city.
He also revealed that he will maintain sharply critical of Trump in an effort to bring back more wholesome American values (McDermid).
Endorsement Findings
Tiger Woods has lucrative million dollar endorsement contracts with a number of different companies looking to tap into his marketing prowess. Some are specifically related to golf, such as Bridgestone and Full Swing. Others, such as Monster Energy and Upper Deck, are not. Woods also has endorsements with MotoCorp, Kowa, and TaylorMade (Forbes).
Fans Have Mixed Feelings About Woods’ Endorsements
2017 was a busy year for Tiger Woods, and not necessarily on the golf course. Although the 40-plus golfer has spent most of the year sidelined, he has still made plenty headlines regarding his lucrative endorsement deals.
Not everyone, however, is impressed.
“Perhaps he should retire,” Bob Manadou of Newark, California opined when asked about Woods’ future. “It seems like he’s always getting hurt. Not too sure how his not playing golf is helping his business partners.”
Many fans were shocked too learn exactly how much Woods has made for his endorsements despite spending a fair amount of recent time on the injured list. According to Forbes, less than 10 percent of the $1.4 billion Woods has earned from his professional career has stemmed from prize money (Forbes).
For the man who once made Nike ubiquitous among golf courses, it’s not hard to guess where the rest came from.
“20 years ago Woods was the end all, be all of golf,” Leon Prime remembered. “He came in right around the time Jack Nicholson was checking out. He was extremely prolific in those early years, which is partly how he got all those endorsements. I didn’t know he was billionaire, though.”
There are other reasons fans have mixed feelings about Woods’ endorsement deals. Although he managed to stay out of trouble for nearly a decade after a series of well-publicized extra-marital affairs, he recently received headlines for the wrong reasons for getting a DUI.
“There’s some celebrities who as soon as they break the law, they lose all their endorsements,” Oli LaRey commented. “Remember what happened to TI and all those guns? I don’t know why things should be any different for Tiger.”
Perhaps it’s because few of Woods’ run-ins with the law have involved anything related to violence.
