On behalf of EbonyLife Films, I am pleased and honored to invite you to join The Foreign Language Film Selection Committee for Nigeria for consideration in the 91st Academy Awards (2019).

As you may well know, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a professional honorary organization with the stated goal of advancing the arts and sciences of motion pictures.

The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized Academy Awards handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This special award is given to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. The purpose of this award is to recognize the artistic contributions that other cultures have made in film for the year.

The Academy Awards presentation attracts millions of viewers all over the world. It is a great privilege to be part of this ceremony and it is our wish at EbonyLife Films to have you be a part of it.

By joining EbonyLife Films in its work to send to AMPAS a film of true quality that uniquely captures the very best that Nigeria has to give, your role as a member of The Foreign Language Film Selection Committee Invitation for Nigeria would include:

1. Making recommendations 2. Reviewing the nominee list and score 3. Reviewing the nomination process 

While serving on The Foreign Language Film Selection Committee Invitation for Nigeria is an honor, it also requires time and commitment, given the efforts that go into planning such an award. EbonyLife Films would appreciate your total support and commitment during the process. Should you accept this invitation, you must expect to attend at least 4 meetings and possibly more during the course of the process.

The first selection committee meeting will be held at a date to be announced: this first scheduled date will be communicated to you upon your acceptance as a committee member. Following your acceptance, you will be kept abreast of all developments, scheduled meetings, and committee notices. Periodic meetings will be scheduled throughout the months leading up to the final selection.

Though you may fear that it will not be easy to attend so many meetings and dedicate yourself so completely to this important process, please kindly be informed that the meeting formats are very flexible as we employ a blend of physical and virtual meetings out of appreciation of the needs of our valuable members.

Why Your Service is So Needed:

Unlike other Academy Awards, the Best Foreign Language Film Award is not presented to a specific individual. Instead, though the award is accepted by the winning film’s director, it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. 

By working with The Foreign Language Film Selection Committee for Nigeria, you would be representing your country and facilitating the very important process of giving Nigerian filmmakers the opportunity to be recognized alongside their peers from around the world on the most glamorous stage in all of cinema—the Oscars.

Every country is invited to submit what it considers its best film to the Academy. Only one film is accepted from each country. The designation of each country\\\\\\\'s official submission has to be done by an organization, jury or committee composed of people from the film industry. 

After each country has designated its official entry, English-subtitled copies of all submitted films are sent to the Academy, where they are screened by the Foreign Language Film Award Committee(s), whose members select by secret ballot the five official nominations. Final voting for the winner is restricted to active and life Academy members who have attended exhibitions of all five nominated films

Then, in January, the entertainment community and film fans around the world turn their attention to the Academy Awards.

It\\\\\\\'s our hope that you will be among this illustrious committee to help select an Oscar winning film for Nigeria.

The deadline to confirm your membership is 5pm WAT on Monday, June 18, 2018.

The Academy has administratively decided that the previous committee is ineligible, as it has not submitted a film in 5 years. The Foreign Language executive committee will meet again in August to review and officially approve the Proposed Committee submitted by EbonyLife Films. 

The Foreign Language Film Selection Committee for Nigeria consists of a minimum of seven (7) industry experts, influencers and professionals with the majority participation from filmmakers from the field of motion pictures in Nigeria.

Our Country’s entrance into the 91st Academy Awards race is not official until our committee is officially approved in August. The Academy will research and approve the proposed committee members.

Once our Selection committee is approved in August, the committee can submit our country’s film. 

91st ACADEMY AWARDS: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM AWARD Selection committees that have been approved are invited to submit only one film for consideration for the Foreign Language Film category.

To be eligible this year, films must have been released in the submitting country for a theatrical run of at least seven consecutive days beginning no earlier than October 1, 2017 and no later than September 30, 2018.

The Selection Committee shall solicit nominations, review films, and short list the winning film from Nigeria. The winner of the Academy Award is chosen by a secret ballot.

As you well know, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a professional honorary organization with the stated goal of advancing the arts and sciences of motion pictures.

EbonyLife Films is the approved body by the Academy to submit the names for membership. Your role as Chairperson would be to oversee the submission process and ensure that the film selected by our committee is the very best that Nigeria has to offer.

The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized Academy Awards handed out annually by the U.S.-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This special award is given to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
