Islamic Carpet Weaving

Art is around us in many different ways. Incorporating art forms into everyday practical items requires not only skill, but forethought and inspiration. The Islamic decorative art form of carpet weaving exemplifies this ability to use art for human need. The purpose of this essay is to describe this art and describe its importance and contributions to history. The essay will also discuss this art form in its current application today.

Muslims viewed their carpet with special esteem and admiration. The traditional Bedouin tribes of Arabia, Persia and Anatolia, the carpet was at the focal point of their wellness being used as a tent sheltering them from the sand storms, a floor covering providing great comfort for the household, wall curtains protecting privacy, and useful items such as blankets, bags, and saddles. It was indeed a resourceful inspiration to make use of the abundant wool produced by their herds (MuslimHeritage.com). As a result these people became significantly involved in this type of creation.

Islamic carpet weaving is based on mathematical principles that, through the use of simple patterns, can be exponentially unfolded into a myriad of shapes and colors. Special knots that originate from the Muslim world denote this special style. The Persian Knot is the most used technique of this art form. While there is a distinct style to these designs, there is plenty of room for the individual to insert his or her own perspective within the work.

The carpet is a sacred item in the religious practices of Islam further creating an intimate relationship with this particular form of creating. The flying carpet myths also contribute to the mystique and specialness that these relics represent. The time period of 622-1800 has seen much development of this art form. A rug or carpet that predates this era is very rare and almost impossible to find. This signifies the importance and longevity of this multi-dimensional tradition. Most art forms come and go, but when such efforts are combined with practical everyday usage, their usefulness contributes to the appeal of the work.
