Leadership Profile
Exercise 5-3
There are a number of leadership issues I have witnessed in the past. First, in a firm I used to work in, there were strategy and marketing decisions made that I definitely did not agree with. Using social media and web 2.0 tools for marketing is a vastly successful and cost effective marketing strategy (). It can help a business get out marketing campaigns cheaply and easily, while also building networks between potential clients and other strategic relationships. However, some businesses have been slow to adapt to such new and innovative trends. In one firm I worked in, management made it quite clear they did not want employees using any sort of social networking to promote business operations. This was based on the idea that it was not as an effective technique that more traditional and costly campaign methods, like direct mail and print marketing. Thus, social media marketing was highly discouraged. Ultimately, I would have encouraged employees to network and advertise on their own brand-tailored social media networks. This does not mean allowing employees to surf the web for personal reasons, but a company driven approach to already established networks that would benefit the business.
The second leadership...
There were a number of employees who had direct relationships to the owner. Several of the workers there were actually the children, nieces and nephews, and other relatives. It made the job very fun to work in because of the relaxed family environment that created the organizational culture. Yet, the style of leadership used by the management often suffered because of the tendency for family relationships to outweigh work relationships, resulting in the isolation of non-family member employees. Often times, family and business identities are blurred within the context of family businesses. According to the research, "culture and other institutional factors, formal and informal, affect the composition of family businesses and the social networks used by family members who are managers" (Stewartt & Hitt, 2011). This can create a situation where family member employees may be treated more informally than other employees. For example, if a family member was late, he or she may get yelled at or scolded, but there were never formal sanctions placed against them. However, non-family member employees received written warnings and write ups for the same types of offenses. This clearly sends a…
CRIMINAL JUSTICE Criminal Justice: Learning Team Leadership Exercise- Research PaperThe key lessons from the Boston Marathon incident include coordination, leadership, communication, and team collaboration. It is said that coordination would have made the detection of bombs before the Marathon started much easier, and the protection of Marathon participants would have been ensured to the maximum level. However, since nothing of similar severity had been identified before this date, Marathon management
Leadership Exercise 3-3 This week, maybe not my most charismatic week to be honest. There are definitely times when I can turn on the charm and be very charismatic, but this week I don't think I've excelled in this regard. I think that I should pay attention to opportunities to be charismatic because this is a skill that can be developed. Since I know that I have it in me to be
Leadership Exercise 5-3. The first leadership scenario is when a co-worker was calling in sick constantly, and it was clear from their attitude that they were not engaged. In this case, the supervisor did nothing, and it ended up affecting the morale of the group. As leader, I would have begun to build a case with this employee for termination, documenting the absences and the fact that they were clearly bogus. The
Leadership Exercise 13-3. I was walking around the store last week. I saw something that was somewhat familiar, but a little bit different. I won't go into the details for proprietary reasons, but this was a product that I had two thoughts about. The first was that I didn't have a need for it myself. The second is that I have a friend who might. He has a small business that he
The virtues of piety and civility Piety is showing loyalty, respect and affection for those closely related (Sergiovanni 2005). Civility is the virtue that deals with the differences found in those unlike one's own. A leader is not limited to established relationships and bonds. He is not blind to other views. Blindness to other shades of opinion prevents learning from them. Piety demands inclusiveness and undivided loyalty while civility accommodates diversity
Leadership Portfolio Political tactics are essential for quality leadership. It is important to be tactful in all situations, and to understand the confounding variables that can impact communication clarity. Politics refers to skillful communications and strategic decision-making. Compromises are critical to good politics. For example, we were working with a large team of over 25 people. Each person had a clearly defined role, but there came a time when egos started
