Leadership Experience through Volunteer Work

Experiences Critical to Entrepreneurial Development

I would say the most important experiences for entrepreneurial development are real world experiences—work in different fields, in different roles, with different degrees of success. The idea here is that the more diverse experience you have, the more of an overall sense you get of what goes into the various aspects of a successful venture.

Thus, as an aspiring entrepreneur, gaining diverse industry experience would be a critical first step in my entrepreneurial development. To achieve this, I could try out as a marketing intern at a startup; from there I could work as a business development volunteer at a non-profit organization. Along the way, I would want to focus on networking, which is another crucial aspect development. It allows one to create meaningful professional relationships that open doors to insights, mentorships, and maybe even future partnerships. It lets you get to know other people and share ideas and create sparks, and that is exciting and part of what is needed in starting any new venture.

At the same time, I think that experiencing failure is also an important part of this development, as strange as that might sound. I am not sure anyone ever plans to fail, but being prepared for the possibility of failure and learning how to handle that is important. That said, gaining that kind of experience really depends on just being committed to a business venture and seeing it through to the end, whatever that may be.
