Leadership Qualities

Events, Activities, and Achievements that Contributed to my Self-Development love sports. I am a big, big sports fan. I came to become such when I was still a child when my father used to always bring me in the games of his favorite basketball team. I admire how the basketball players work together to make their team win, how apparent it was from each of them their determination to play their best and win the trophy. Sometimes, my father also used to bring me in the team's practices and work-outs. I really admire how the players demonstrate discipline. This is perhaps one of the reasons why they always win their games. Since then, I told to myself that someday I wanted to be like them.

During my youth, however, I turned out to be a happy-go-lucky individual. The discipline that I admired from the team that I used to watch play basketball seemed not to be, even in little ways, in my thoughts and vocabulary. I rarely studied my lessons and I never did my home-works. Hence, my teachers in school used to always ask for my parents to visit them because of my bad behavior and lack of study habits. The good and caring guidance counselor in our school, however, had this solution in an objective of helping me - he placed me to join the school's basketball varsity. It was one of the school's strategies to teach me with discipline, hoping that I could learn good virtues during my stay with the varsity.

I can say that my entire experience with the basketball varsity was a big factor that contributed to my self-development. Every game events, basketball activities such as practices, work-outs, and the varsity's voluntary participation to community services, have instilled within me good behavior, attitude, and positive outlook in life. From the game events, I learned the value of team-work and cooperation. From the basketball practices and work-outs, I learned the value of self-discipline. From the community services participated by the varsity, I learned how to value other people. After some time of being with the varsity, I realized that these values are not just present in me whenever I spend time with the team. Instead, I realized that even when I am off the field, I have been naturally demonstrating these values. For instance, I already got the time to study my lessons and do my homework. Or, my teachers no longer call for my parents because I behave perfectly well in school.
