Leadership

Exercise 3-3

This week, maybe not my most charismatic week to be honest. There are definitely times when I can turn on the charm and be very charismatic, but this week I don't think I've excelled in this regard. I think that I should pay attention to opportunities to be charismatic because this is a skill that can be developed. Since I know that I have it in me to be this way, I figure that I should probably cultivate this skill a little more, because that will help me to be a better leader.

I think back to a recent trip I took. I was able to get a free seat upgrade just by asking, and when I met people I was able to impress them right away, gain their confidence and talk business effectively. I got a lot out of that trip in that regard, just be being at the top of my charismatic game. The trick for me is to always be able to tap into that when I need to, make it just a natural part of my everyday.

Exercise 4-6.

As mentioned above, this week's been a bit slow for me, mostly just working on my own. So there haven't been a lot of opportunities for leadership in that regard. I can say that sometimes you have to take leadership with customers and that is something I've done this week. Customers sometimes require guidance the same as co-workers do. They need to know what you are capable of, what you are not going to be able to do for them, and how deadlines are going to work. In general, if a project is not going as smoothly as possible, you have to direct people to fix that, something I've done well in the past. This involves not only calling on co-workers to help but getting clarity from customers about key issues, and effectively managing their expectations as well.

This score indicates that "your level of emotionality is too low to enhance your charisma." That's an interesting take, for sure. I agree in part, that a little bit more expressiveness on the positive side of things enhances charisma, but you have to be in check a little bit. Freely expressing anger, getting into fights, and things like that are not positive emotional displays and can undermine you quite quickly.

As this indicates, I have a pretty good situation right now. I would like to see more specific training to back up the words of encouragement, but otherwise I'm in a positive place with good leadership and a good team.

On this, I have a "below average" task orientation. That's probably fair -- I don't give enough direction and just sort of count on people to figure it out, and help each other out. But part of that is working with good people. On another quiz, I noted that I think good people don't need that much direction. The one about the Internet is funny -- I completely understand the mentality that goofing off on the Internet is bad and I'd hate to see someone do too much of that, but we're not robots. A bit of downtime here and there helps the brain work better. As long as the work gets done, I'm not too worried about the details -- some folks are really fast and will have a bit more downtime -- if they're goofing off at work, that's on me to make sure they have more work to do.

On this I am in the middle, but closer to being a participative leader than an autocrat. That's a pretty accurate reflection. I am cautious about things like groupthink -- I don't want the group hiring a new team member because they'll take the person they get along with best -- but mostly I support a collaborative environment.
