With this quiz, I have all of these traits, indicating that I am good at empowerment. I agree with this assessment.

Quiz 7-2

This score indicates a "below average tendency to play office politics," a statement with which I agree wholeheartedly. Office politics detracts from maximum efficiency and effectiveness. I detracts from making the best decisions possible. Organizations full of people playing politics are not only negative places in which to work, they aren't very productive either, and tend not be leaders in their industries. The only question where I wish my answer was different was for #16 -- I admittedly have not done nearly enough to cultivate a network of contacts. I've started looking at networking strategies in order to learn more about this and remedy this, because I recognize that as being a weakness that will hold me back. I guess the points where the quiz falls down are on Q11. Telling people what they want to hear is not good politics unless that person is a low-level manager with zero upward mobility. Most CEOs and other top people I've met have almost the opposite personality from low-level managers; they prefer direct communication. You don't impress them by telling them what you want to hear, you impress them with clear, honest communication, even if that means being blunt. So if you're playing politics, who do you want to impress? The guy at the top of the company, or the going nowhere low level manager who needs his ego stroked? I think the quiz gets that one wrong.

The score of 9 doesn't look too good, when the interpretation states that "the more of these tactics you use frequently or very frequently, the more influential you probably are." I lean heavily on logical arguments, which means that I don't really bother with other forms of influence. Of course, I want to work with people who are swayed by reason and evidence because that's how you get the best decision-making. Appeal to emotions is logical fallacy -- you aren't going to get the best results when that's your selling point. An interesting point on #14 -- I won't threaten it, I'll just do it. I'm all about getting things done. Threats are idle and create a lot of negativity. Either somebody resents you for the threat, or they call your bluff and you do it and they resent you anyway. Getting things done doesn't have to cause resentment, so I avoid that tactic. And while I understand the effectiveness of bribery (pens, favors) I don't believe in it. There's no difference between that and payola in my book -- either the idea is the best one or it isn't. It's interesting in that I'm not that flexible on some of that stuff, even though the textbook says that will reduce my leadership effectiveness. I guess it just comes down to leadership style.
