Leadership Applications and Theories
Tim has been described by both his boss and friends as charismatic. It is clear why this is so. In addition to constantly inspiring his staff (something he believes is critical in the acquisition of a competitive edge), Tim also continually motivates his team.
How effective do you think Tim's posts are in terms of expressing his charisma?
In the words of Williams (2011, p. 423), "charismatic leaders have strong, confident, dynamic personalities that attract followers and enable the leaders to create strong bonds with their followers." Essentially, charismatic leaders should be able to broadcast their 'charm' so that they can inspire others to action. Indeed, it is through their infectious charm (and not the formal positions they occupy) that leaders of this nature inspire followers. Tim's posts are highly inspirational and on this front, he succeeds in communicating with his team on a rather deep, and perhaps emotional, level. This way, he successfully expresses his charisma. Essentially, charisma, according to Lussier and Achua (2012, p. 325) "manifests itself in the interplay between the leader (his or her traits and behaviors) and the follower (his or her values, needs, perceptions, and beliefs)." By posting inspirational messages to his group, Tim demonstrates his ability to motivate, project positive energy, and relay positive influence -- all three being hallmarks of a charismatic leader.
How effective do you think Tim's posts are for purposes of inspiring the sales representatives to sell more auto parts and supplies?
Charismatic leaders possess the ability to not only boost the motivation of workers but also their creativity and productivity. Even though Tim did not receive as many responses as he had anticipated, I am convinced that his posts are highly effective when it comes to inspiring his team to further enhance sales. As it would be expected, effecting sales may be a difficult undertaking. This is particularly the case given that from time to time, sales representatives may be required to actively engage irate and difficult clients. The messages Tim posted appear to be tailored to pass a clear overall message -- that of moving forward regardless of the prevailing circumstances. Those who may find it difficult to successfully make sales dues to the stiff competition from other vendors are encouraged to keep going with messages such as "welcome every rejection. It means you are one step closer to a Yes," and "the harder you try, the luckier you get." Those who find the going tough out there in the market will surely be inspired to push harder by such messages. Studies conducted in the past have clearly indicated that "in general, the followers of charismatic leaders are more committed and satisfied, are better performers….and simply work harder" (Williams, 2011, p. 423).
What else do you recommend that Tim do to express his charisma via social networking websites?
