Learning Experience Plan
Learning Experience Goal: With hospital technology increasing rapidly and many patients entering labor and delivery wards without any prior medical care, it has become essential to develop a form of GBS test that can be done immediately (Redfern, 2009). The purpose of this learning experience is to research and formulate an experiment to determine what, if any, of the modern GBS testing technologies for instant testing are as accurate as the traditional lab test.
The objectives of this learning experience is to first determine whether a reliable method exists and can be offered to laboring mothers to test for GBS colonization (Montague, 2008)and second learn what the most reliable method actually is, as the United States and Europe appear to differ on their testing methods (Colbourn, 2007).
Interview with a Nurse Educator: This learning education experience is designed for a hospital labor and delivery unit. The unit I selected has on staff and certified midwife nurse practitioner who oversees most of the mothers who enter the unit without any prior medical attention. She has direct experience with this hospital's protocols as well as a varied education from the rest of the nurses on staff regarding testing technology and excessive treatment and intervention prevention. My primary goal in this interview will be to learn about technologies she has encountered and what the accuracy was with these technologies.
Self-designed Learning Experience #1: The first self-designed learning experience will be to conduct the standard GBS labs of the vaginal, rectal, and urine swabs and determine whether the tests can be done individually or must be done together for complete accuracy. This learning experience will allow the participant the chance to gauge the accuracy of this traditional method and understand what each component includes and ensures.
