¶ … leaves a remarkable impression on a reader's mind and can transform the dullest subject into a work of art. For example, a solid technical writer can turn a manual into a masterpiece, explaining the features of a DVD player so that even an 80-year-old novice can understand how to use the equipment. Good poets weave words in novel ways to evoke emotional responses in readers, and good novelists create characters so lifelike, we care about them as if they were our own friends and family. Writing about current events or politics demands carefully crafted opinions and well-formulated logic that persuades and entertains at the same time. Finally, good writers actually write. They acknowledge that productivity is often more important than perfection.

Good writing is more than perfect grammar, although any writer must master at least the basics of grammatical structure and style. The rules of grammar ensure clarity, as a misplaced modifier can entirely change the meaning of a sentence. Big words can be fun to use but writers who wield them willy-nilly come across as amateurish. Punchy phrasing using powerful yet recognizable words ensures brevity, which can be a writer's best friend. Writers, especially those who specialize in non-fiction, must also remember to organize their thoughts and stop assuming that their readers are on the same page as they are.

When I write I first outline what I will say, either in my head or on paper. Once I start I don't look back or linger too long on any one word or phrase or else I will get stuck. I don't believe in writer's block, I only believe in working hard to overcome self-censorship and worry. I don't like revision work, and rewriting is my greatest weakness. I don't yet know whether or not I am a good writer because not enough people have read what I wrote or offered feedback. This class, I hope, will help me hone my talents. I need more frequent and more honest feedback so that whatever I write will become as good as it can possibly be, whether the finished piece is a product manual, a poem, or a presidential speech.

Impressions When in Rome The film When in Rome deals with a young woman has lived a fairly sheltered life and has had limited experience with relationships. The romances she has had have made her feel that love and romance are unimportant in her existence. This changes when she goes to Rome for her sister's wedding and meets her love interest. Richard Hughes: A High Wind in Jamaica This story, the first novel by Richard Hughes, takes place in the 19th Century, and mixes the diverse subjects of humor, irony, satire, pirates, sexuality and children into a very interesting tale, with many sidebar stories tucked into the main theme. The first part of the story has an eerily familiar ring and meteorological link with the December, 2004 tsunami-related disaster in Asia. In A

This is a deducted consequence of the inability of the market to absorb all the immigrants coming every year in the country. More precisely, "the number of immigrants -- legal and illegal -- living in the U.S., is growing at an unprecedented rate. U.S. Census Bureau data indicate that 1.6 million legal and illegal immigrants settle in the country each year. In 2006, the immigrant, or foreign-born population, reached

Hitler's Ideology And Propaganda All propaganda must be popular and its intellectual level must be adjusted to the most limited intelligence among those it is addressed to." Thus wrote Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf, while serving a prison sentence in the Bavarian capital of Munich following an aborted coup that he had attempted in the fall of 1923 -- known in history as the "The Beer Hall Putsch." Another decade was

Nursing Home Report on Conditions at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust The following report is based on extensive observation of the conditions for patients living at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. While some patients received moderate care, overall, the quality of care in this facility was appalling. All patients -- all people -- deserve to be treated with dignity, and this was far from the case. The

Scientology Introducing a New Religious Movement, one must be as objective as possible. I, for instance, could choose to tell you that L. Ron Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology in 1954 and marketed it as an organization for social reform that essentially became the global force it is today, with (young, professional, stylish, racially-diverse) adherents providing positive sound bites on Scientology.org that promote (in naturalistic, community-oriented settings) the religion as
