Assessing the Future of Voice over IP (VoIP) in Large Scale Enterprises

The total cost of ownership (TCO) of communications systems is under increasing scrutiny which is leading large-scale enterprises to evaluate and adopt VoIP technology as their main telecommunications system platform.

Prior to the recession many large-scale enterprises were beginning to replace their capital-intensive telephone and telecommunications networks with VoIP-based networks due to the lower total cost of ownership. The economic recession has accelerated these migrations (Basaglia, Caporarello, Magni, Pennarola, 2009) as TCO is now a very high priority in many globally-based enterprises that have high telecommunications costs (Athwal, Harmantzis, Tanguturi, 2010). In parallel with the economic benefits of VoIP, the technological advances have also accelerated. Location-aware VoIP (Bayer, Xu, Rakocevic, Habermann, 2010) has many uses in customer service and post-sales service organizations globally for example. The ability to deliver stateless engines or order state technology that allows for transactions to be tracked is also now possible over VoIP (Blefari-Melazzi, Daigle, Femminella, 2009). The cost efficiencies overall are continually being augmented by the technological advances at the same time (Nunn, McGuire, Crowe, 2010). All of these factors are also being balanced with the need for greater security (Diffie, Landau, 2009) (Tryfonas, Sutherland, Pompogiatzis, 2007) (Wang, Wei, 2009) (Xavier, 2008). The next evolutionary growth cycle of VoIP in fact will be in the area of security and wireless access through WiMAX 802.16 compatible networks across broad geographies as global enterprises look for greater TCO and more use of this evolving technology. In conclusion VoIP and the continual advances in HTTP and XML integration occurring with this technology will lead to rapid market growth.
