There are several different issues that those involved with long-term care provision and its patients currently face. One of the most prominent is the fact that due to advances in technology and medication, people are living longer than they have ever lived before, as such, the need for long-term care is greater than it has ever been, which means that there is a great demand on resources to actually provision such care. This demand not only includes physical facilities, equipment, and medical supplies, but also personnel that are sufficiently trained to staff and take care of an ever increasing number of patients who require long-term care.

Another highly salient issue regarding long-term care that is fundamentally related to the amount of resources involved for long-term care is its cost. Quite simply, the costs associated with long-term care are staggering. Research indicates that "The total U.S. long-term care spending is substantial. That total reached $210.9 billion in 2011, about 1.4% of the gross national product" (Freudlich, 2014). Thus, simply paying for long-term care is an issue that will affect virtually everyone involved with it, including family members of individuals who require care. Finally, in addition to the increased demand for long-term care services and the growing costs associated with it, the specific way in which that care is actually provided is another issue. There are many different options for long-term care, including nursing homes, in-home services, and assisted living facilities.

Families and employers are perhaps the demographics that are greatest affected by the aforementioned issues. Family members must contend with those rising costs, and may need to explore a variety of payment options that includes long-term care insurance. Additionally, family members must decide which treatment option is most appropriate for their loved one. Family members can also play an instrumental role in helping to ensure that long-term care patients are able to obtain government funding to assist with costs. Funding options include Medicaid and certain aspects of Medicare, which can help to offset costs. Frequently, however, this sort of funding needs to be supplemented with payments made by an individual and his or her family.

Employers of long-term care facilities are affected by the issues related to this service in extremely pragmatic ways. They are the ones who must ensure that they have adequate resources to provide care for a multitude of people with a bevy of different needs and specialized areas of treatment. In addition to procuring sufficient funds to obtain these resources, one of the primary concerns of employers of long-term care facilities is staffing their locations with people who have been sufficiently trained to handle the various levels of treatment that patients will inevitably need. Thus, it is vital that employees implement policies which reinforce the level of professionalism and quality treatment provisioning that is key to obtaining and maintaining a steady patient base. Such policies should likely include minimum education and experience requirements, as well as (continual) testing for substance abuse and driver's license privileges.
