My Community My Town
LOCATION
Los Angeles city my Community my Town is situated along the coastal plain sandwiched between a hilly peninsula and two mountain ranges. Under the mountain peaks are valleys, rivers, ocean beaches, valleys, and canyons. Los Angeles city was claimed in 1542 by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and established in 1781 under the Spanish governor. Later on, in April 1850, Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality. The city saw rapid development due to the oil discovery in the 1890s. This city was likely situated here due to the area\'s strategic location in terms of geographical features like water and mountains (Soja, 1986). Such features could enhance its security in terms of military operations. For instance, historically, Los Angeles was founded on a village of Yaanga that, according to the Spanish, translates to Poison oak place. Also, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the site was a maritime explorer and was on an official military exploring expedition moving along the pacific coast.
PLACE
Los Angeles city is located in southern California in the United States. It is the second-largest city in population and metropolitan coming after the New York city in the United States. The city extends across the coastal plain between the Pacific Ocean and two mountain ranges. The larger Los Angeles County encompasses 90 incorporated cities like Long Beach, Pasadena, and Beverly Hills (Jerrett et al., 2005). The county also includes two of the Santa Catalina, San Clemente, and the Channel Islands; Mount Baldy, which is more than 2,330 square km of the desert; 3,062 meters high; and 120 km of seacoast.
Moreover, because the county and the city are geographically, economically, and culturally interwoven, any consideration of Los Angeles has to some level involve both entities. The population density around metropolitan fluctuates as high as 50,000 per square mile next to downtown Los Angeles to as low as one person per square mile within the mountainous areas. The city covers 1,207 square km with over 3,694,820, while Los Angeles–Long Beach–Glendale Metro Division has a population of 9,519,338, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Glendale Metro Division has 9,818,605; and Los Angeles–Long Beach–Santa Ana Metro Area, has 12,828,837.
On the other hand, Los Angeles has, with time, experienced a shift in racial and ethnic makeup. For example, during the Spanish rule in 1781, European ancestry was the minority, while African ancestry comprised 26 out of the 44 original settlers (Cassels et al. 2020). While from the late 19th century, whites became the dominant group due to the arrival of Midwesterners in Los Angeles. There are also European Jews who came in the early 20th century and late 19th century. Also, a Mexican race trooped as agricultural workers during the Mexican revolution in 1910 (Soja, 1986). Currently, Los Angeles has Hispanic, Asian, and Native American populations. African Americans also contribute to around one-tenth of the whole population.
Los Angeles, also known as the heart of California, has recently become one of the world-class cities. Its established tourism, commerce, agriculture, and industrial centers have enhanced this. For quite a long time, the city\'s climate has been benign, outdoor recreation, extensive leisure, and a special aura of celebrity accompanied by Hollywood (Radil et al. 2010). Angeleno\'s lifestyle depends on the automobile, favors informality, and idealizes the single-family dwelling. With notable distinctions, the skyline is horizontal rather than vertical.
Furthermore, Los Angeles has extraordinary diverse racial and ethnic groups due to immigration and the increasing gap between the poor and the rich. Nonetheless, the city also has perennial challenges like riots, fire outbreaks, smog, earthquakes, and gang warfare. However, the city also boasts of geographic variety and a mild climate.
Besides, Los Angeles has coastal plains differentiated by low mountains interspersed by an arc of a still higher mountain, along seacoast and steep passes (Rashed & Weeks, 2003). Almost half of the city consists of mountain chains running east-west with different firestorms, mudslides, and earthquakes. Also, sprawling and massive San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains are to the north and northeast. The Puente Hills, the Santa Monica Mountains, San Jose Hills, and Repetto Hills stretch in front of the sprawling and massive San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains and are less or more in parallel lines from west to east (Soja, 1986). The chains delineate San Gabriel, San Bernardino valleys, and San Fernando. The remarkable Los Angeles\' natural feature is distinctive coastline beaches that attract millions of sun-worshippers annually.
In addition, the climatic condition of Los Angeles is typically Mediterranean or semiarid. Subsequently, the bowl-like arrangement of ranges and the warm climate provide a conducive condition for the photochemical smog, a well-known Los Angeles phenomenon; that has been part of the landscape since the 1940s (Camp et al. 2010). Otherwise, temperatures differ widely depending on the location. Los Angeles is also known as the creative capital in the world. Almost one-sixth of the population work in the creative industry and are actors, artists, musicians, dancers, writers, and filmmakers. However, Los Angeles residents are predominantly Christians (Radil et al., 2010). They are exercising the custom of conducting mass and procession in honor of Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles to commemorate the establishment of Los Angeles city in 1781.
The economy of Los Angeles is influenced by entertainment, international trade, tourism, technology, aerospace, petroleum, apparel, and fashion. Other industries of significance include law, healthcare, telecommunication, finance, and transport. Los Angeles city is the largest manufacturing center in the United States and has the busiest port in the USA. Los Angeles residents are governed by an elected government that includes the mayor of Los Angeles and Los Angeles City Council, which work under a mayor-council government and the city attorney. Equally, the city has several appointed officers and departments. The city also has neighborhood councils that represent the diversity of stakeholders (Rashed & Weeks, 2003). Furthermore, the residents elect first, second, third, and fourth supervisorial districts supervisors.
REGION
Los Angeles is within the state of California. Within the state assembly of California, Los Angeles is divided between fourteen districts, while in the senate, the city is divided between eight districts. Los Angeles is divided among ten congressional districts in the house of representatives United States (Logan et al. 2002). The city is governed by an elected government that includes the mayor of Los Angeles and Los Angeles City Council, which work under a mayor-council government and the city attorney. Equally, the city has several appointed officers and departments, including the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, Los Angeles Police Department, Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Public Library, and Los Angeles Department of Transportation (Soja, 1986). The city also has neighborhood councils that represent the diversity of stakeholders. Furthermore, the residents elect first, second, third, and fourth supervisorial districts supervisors.
HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
Los Angeles is significantly impacted by air pollution in smog due to heavy dependence on the Long Beach Port and automobiles. Subsequently, San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles Basin are exposed to the atmospheric inversion that holds in exhausts from locomotives, road vehicles, manufacturing, airplanes, and shipping. Currently, the smog season lasts from approximately May to October, while due to less rainfall of only around 380mm per year: pollution remains over several subsequent days (Radil et al. 2010). Hence, the challenge of air quality in Los Angeles. To control the escalating air pollution, the California state is helping the country reduce pollution by adopting low emission vehicles. Due to such aggressive steps as the use of hybrid and electric cars, enhancement in mass transit to control pollution, smog is anticipated to reduce in the coming years. Also, Los Angeles has a huge fault line known as San Andreas Fault piercing through the area and is located just 53km from downtown Los Angeles.
