¶ … Shadow's
Shedding skin and I've been picking
Scabs again
I'm down
Digging through
My old muscles
Looking for a clue
I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been
I've been wallowing in my own confused
And insecure delusions
For a piece to cross me over
or a word to guide me in I wanna feel the changes coming down
I wanna know what I've been hiding in My shadow
Change is coming through my shadow
My shadow's shedding skin
I've been picking
My scabs again
I've been crawling on my belly
Clearing out what could've been
I've been wallowing in my own chaotic
And insecure delusions
I wanna feel the change consume me,
Feel the outside turning in I wanna feel the metamorphosis and Cleansing I've endured within
My shadow (Jung)
Change is coming (Expectancy)
Now is my time (Self-Leadership)
Listen to my muscle memory (Emotional Intelligence)
Contemplate what I've been clinging to (Maslow)
Forty six and two ahead of me (Sequential Development)
The lyrics of the song demonstrate the writer's need for self-empowerment and show how through personal leadership, his goals will likely be accomplished. The emphasis on the fact that change is something that is necessary for self growth also seems to be a central theme in the lyrics. The Jungian "shadow" is another major theme in this song, and the writer chose to describe this shadow as part of his aenima or animus. This is part of the Jungian school of psychology and has much to do with personal development relative to both a person's potential and a person's self-awareness when it comes to understanding and accepting their own limitations.
Communication styles also vary with the lyrics, in that there are many different cryptic terms or lyrics throughout the song that could make understanding and comprehending the message rather difficult. As we know from communication theory, both the listener and the writer need to be working from the same "code book" when it comes to the coded symbols and meanings of the song in question. Prior understanding of Jungian theory as well as DNA science can also help the listener understand the meaning of the song. Since humans have 46 chromosomes, all in opairs, the writer is suggesting that 46 and 2 is the next step in human chromosomal evolution, where an additional pair of chromosomes will help him or humanity unlock something previously untouchable or undiscovered. It is also a metaphor for personal growth and the idea that perhaps it is impossible to grow or evolve beyond certain events or mentalities due to the fact that humans or the song writer haven't yet evolved beyond them.
The song is also an attempt to persuade a certain listener to push hard to grown and understand their own mistakes and shortcomings. The Jungian "shadow" is an excellent example of the idea that we all have to live with both the good and bad in the world and within ourselves. This type of persuasion is accomplished through both the lyrics as well as the meter and tone of the music itself. The music is building, churning, and seems to have an almost mechanical beat which gives credence to the idea that over time, hard work and repetition make the difference between success and failure. The crescendo during the chorus serves to both emphasize and cement the idea that people's own personal evolution is often a culmination of much thinking and growth.
