PROGRAM PLANNING EXERCISE

It was probably a mistake to proceed with the interview. First, even if the subject was being completely honestly when she said she had no objections to it, her responses would be less likely to be as honest when the interviewer is an acquaintance. The impulse to present one's self in a more favorable light is stronger when the audience is an old acquaintance than a perfect stranger. Furthermore, this occurs on two different levels: it can be deliberate on the part of the subject or it can be completely unintentional or subconscious. Second, her response that she had no objection to following through with the interview is not reliable, because it is unlikely that she would have felt comfortable answering differently.

It is just a natural social reaction to respond to similar apologetic inquiries such as "Would you prefer not to do the interview with me?" In a way that avoids disappointing the other person and very typically, people say things like "No, it's OK" or "NO, I don't mind" even when that is untrue.

In fact, even if she wanted to say no, she could also have been embarrassed at your assumptions about the reason(s) she would be unwilling to talk to you as though her declining automatically indicates that she is embarrassed about her life. In this situation, that would be a very fair assumption because being included on a list of "low income" individuals is indeed the very type of thing that would be associated with embarrassment, especially in the context of an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend. Finally, on your end, it is difficult to maintain objectivity when the subject is an acquaintance. To the extent you have positive and/or sympathetic feelings toward the person, you might be inclined to interpret their responses more positively; conversely, to the extent you have negative feelings toward the person, you could interpret their responses more negatively.
