Patronage and Cronyism Patronage and Cronyism are two of the forms in supporting an individual or a group to a particular position in an organization. More often, these forms are associated to government positions. In terms of organization or government positions, patronage and cronyism are entirely different in their nature of adherence.

Patronage speaks of support from people because of certain reasons. Some of the reasons may be due to people's loyalty, the intelligence and ability of the person being supported, the well-roundedness and good leadership of an individual, or any other reasons, usually on positive grounds, that may cause others to support. In government, patronage occurs in cases of supporting a leader because of the belief that he has the abilities to lead and the ideals that would present good results. Cronyism, on the other hand, usually takes negative perceptions.

Often, it means supporting an individual (i.e. giving high-ranking position at work or in government) because of certain closeness or relationship, and not because of the individual's abilities and skills. Sometimes, cronyism takes place because of some intentions that would provide advantages and benefits to the person himself who gives support. The Presence of Patronage, Cronyism, and Favoritism Aside from Patronage and Cronyism, there is also the form of Favoritism that lives in operations of various sectors. Patronage, Cronyism, and Favoritism are not only found in government operations.

Even in other areas of the economy such as the private and non-profit sectors, these three forms can be found. Generally, it can be said that patronage, cronyism, and favoritism are present, and can be present, in any structure of an organization. They can be found in every aspects of a management structure.

While management structures are divisions designed in relation to the organization of concerned individuals of a management, the three elements (patronage, cronyism, and favoritism) of a human behavior in a management (or any organization, such as the government) are aspects that can occur in an individual's relation to others. The government, and all sectors of the economy have the element of such management structures.

And within any structure of an organization, there can be the presence of patronage, cronyism, and favoritism because these are behaviors that can be natural to humans when it comes to human relationships.
