ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN CREATING A HEALTHFUL ENVIRONMENT
Recent data show that Americans consume, on average, more than three times the recommended level of sodium per day in their food and beverages. High salt intake contributes to high blood pressure and its complications -- stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, and kidney failure (Gulis? et al., 2014). In fact, thousands of lives could be saved if sodium consumption could be lowered in people with hypertension (high blood pressure).
The government has the sole purpose of providing safe and healthy environments to its citizens at all times. A healthy environment is beneficial directly to the people, and indirectly to the government. The safety of the environment is dependent on the legislative, social, and commercial actions that are taken by the individual people within and without governments. For instance, the world climate is largely dependent on the sole contributions of each nation in having it is protected at all times. Likewise, the government of the United States of America should be wary of the levels of sodium consumed by its population. With such high salt intake, there have been cases of high blood pressure and its complications -- stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, and kidney failure (International Conference of the Asia-Pacific Society for Agricultural and Food Ethics, & In Sora, 2015). Regulations have to be established by the government to handle this issue before it becomes a common problem.
Universally, the sustainability of the environment and its productivity relies on every step taken by the governments of the world towards it. the failures that have always been witnessed through the destruction of the health of the environment all arise from the government failures to be at the forefront of managing the protection measures and strategies in place. Therefore, the governments should be at the forefront in running everything, making sure that it has done enough in providing an equitable environment. What the people consume is important in boosting their levels of health. The government to minimize health hazards whenever possible should establish the heath regulations (Nestle, 2007).
The governments should do all it takes to provide the mechanisms and measures that serve to protect the environment. The governments have the role of stopping the disposal of dangerous substances into the environment, something that goes against its health standards. Moreover, the governments should be required to ensure the legislations that protect and provide the best of the environment for the living and their health. In doing such, the government will ensure that there are low levels and possibilities those infections, diseases, and anything that hampers the health of the environment.
The consumption of sodium at its high levels is detrimental to the health conditions among the Americans now. The bodies of the people will tend to adapt to this high consumption of sodium. Such adaptations enable the bodies to survive and thrive through variable environmental conditions at any given time. To master what is specifically interesting and useful to their bodies; organisms seek ways of adapting to the new situations and hence managing to live even with such changes in the environment.
One factor, as indicated by the "nanny state," is that every individual has to be exposed to lower levels of sodium in their bread, in other common foods, and in restaurants, to protect people who have salt-sensitive illnesses. Nonetheless, high consumption of salt is not a healthy step to many people. As stated, there are many cases of illnesses arising from this consumption of high sodium content materials. The issue has been made as part of the health policy, notably among those who have allergies and other effects on certain food materials. However, they cannot miss the basic nutrients that come with the consumption of such materials.
The public is a basic consumer that has to seek food materials from the manufacturers and producers. With the health policies in place, the manufacturers must provide food materials and consumption guidelines that protect these health policies in place (Nestle, 2007). Nonetheless, in most scenarios, it is the consumers who are made to bear the costs of different versions of foods to have their health protected. The manufacturers take the opportunity to implement the policies within their stages of food production and leveraging the costs to be incurred by those who are the consumers of such particular food materials.
In some cases, the manufacturers bear the costs directly as they make the consumers bear the same costs indirectly as they have to consider more costs in adopting new methods and strategies of providing a variety of food materials that caters for the health conditions of the different consumers in the market. The consumers are always expected to cover the costs. For instance, consumers who are meant to consume certain food materials with special ingredients that ensure their health is protected, have to leverage for the increased costs, in any case, for such food materials, as they purchase these products (Pinstrup-Andersen & Watson, 2011). The manufacturers know that they are not to take up all the costs as they seek to make revenue from them, but ensure they keep up with the food health policies in place.
