As one might expect, cultural psychology is no different. The author of this brief report has been asked to consider a brief case study and example from the cultural psychology field. Specifically, the author has been asked to go to a grocery store or restaurant that is different than one's own culture. Concurrent and primary to that will be a review of an article that is relevant to the field and example given above.
Included in that would be items such as the narrative of the article, the methods and samples used, the reporting/findings delivered, the relevance to the class and a few other things. While it would be optimal to be a "fly on the wall" in areas of different cultures, there is the recognition and reaction that reflects that one is not of that culture, even if it is subtle. Analysis The author of this report, as part of the cultural restaurant/store foray, went to a Mexican restaurant.
Of course, the author of this report is not Hispanic, let alone Mexican, and thus it would be easy to tell this by the author walking into that store. That being said, the response from minder of the restaurant was clearly different than it was for certain other people that came into the restaurant. However, this was easily explained. The people for which the response was different were fellow Hispanics and everyone in the conversation spoke unfettered Spanish.
Concurrent to that was the indicate that the people knew each other or, at the very least, shared a common culture and this was the least of what bonded them. The author of this response is not sure, of course, because the author does not know Spanish and thus did not know precisely what was being said. Even so, the exchange was warm and jovial.
The above, it would seem, should not be surprising and researchers need to be careful (Cartwright, 2016; Mendoza, 1989) As for the article that was to be reviewed for this assignment, the author found the following answers in the article. As the subject of the article suggests, there was an assessment of the effects on participation (and the activeness of the above) when it comes to market research. The authors start straight away by saying that participation in market research can determine the experiences of consumers and the evaluations of marketing services.
To prove this point, the article's authors used a sample of 120 consumers who were interviewed immediately after shopping at a supermarket, or at least 4-5 days after the fact. The hypotheses that were tested include the negative effective of expecting to evaluate the store, whether restricting the cognitive resources involved was a bad thing and the negative effect of having to evaluate service as a task. The results of the study revealed that the control group was held more positively than the hypothesis group.
This actually dovetailed and echoed prior research and thus does not add all that much to the body of work out there, other than verifying prior work. This all relates to the class in that there are certain ways that market and cultural psychology must be done to get the most accurate results. Conclusion In the end, it is clear that the article reviewed as part of this report can and should have implications on how cultural psychology work is done in the field.
The field example as well as the article prove that even little things matter such as whether the researcher blends into the culture being reviewed, when a person should be queried about.
