I agree that having a solid math foundation can be beneficial when using Microsoft Excel. I would think that, yes, if you want to be really proficient in Excel you should know some math. First of all, Excel relies heavily on mathematical formulas and functions (like SUM, AVERAGE, IF, VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, etc.). If you have a good math foundation you will be able to grasp these functions fairly easily because you will understand what they do. Not any kind of math, though—specifically, I would say a foundation in statistics is what would be preferred. Statistical functions like AVERAGE, STDEV, and VAR are going to make a lot more sense if you already have knowledge of basic statistics. And then basic computer logic skills would help, too, because logic functions like IF, AND, OR rely on understanding Boolean logic and conditional expressions.

Second, Excel is often used for data analysis and reporting. A math background is going to help people understand and interpret trends in data, see and understand the relationships between variables, and grasp the value of charts and graphs (although this is not necessarily an extension of a math foundation). However, more advanced Excel functions like array formulas and pivot tables will require mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
