¶ … accounts are some of the most popular financial tools. However, they do not represent much of an investment opportunity since most banks do not offer high rates of return or interest on them. This is one of the largest disadvantages of these accounts, their low rates of investment return. They are relatively liquid and allow the owner a large amount of freedom in using the money deposited in the account. This represents one of the major advantages to this type of account- liquidity. For customers looking to put their money into an account where they have easy access to it and where they are not concerned with a high rate of return. A checking account is ideal.

Money Market Account

This investment vehicle typically pays out higher returns on investments than a checking account, but as far as other vehicles goes, money markets offer little returns. Money market accounts are very safe though, and for an investor looking for very low risk investment vehicles, these accounts offer an excellent alternative to other investments. A money market account also offers a certain amount of diversity in investing. Since many banks have their own money market accounts, the customer can choose freely which banks offer the best rates of return on these investment vehicles. This is a major advantage over checking accounts. However, these accounts do not offer much in terms of liquidity compared to a checking account. Customers are often charged fees for withdrawing money depending on the structure of the account.

Passbook Savings Account

These accounts are an excellent alternative to online banking for customers and investors wishing to keep accurate track of their account. These accounts work similarly to a checking account except the customer keeps track of withdraws, deposits, and purchases on the account using a paper passbook, or record. This is one of the disadvantages of these accounts, that they use paper tracking and are not typically available at many banks. This type of account often offers very low interest rates and is a less lucrative investment than a money market or other account. These types of accounts are very similar to checking accounts, and as more and more transactions occur online, passbook savings accounts have become less and less common.

Certificate of Deposit

These investment vehicles are often referred to as "CD's," offer investors a very low risk option for returns. Typically the longer an investor locks his or her money up in a CD, the higher the rate of return. One of the advantages to these types of investment vehicles is that they often offer higher interest rates than checking or savings accounts. However, there are often penalties for withdrawing money early, and some CD's require customers to deposit money for years in order to earn a decent rate of return. This is one of the disadvantages of CD's, as the money is not very liquid while it is earning interest. CD's commonly offer the highest rates of return on the initial deposit or investment of many of the more common bank accounts.
