McDonald's employees and managers have alleged that retention is deliberately kept low, to avoid paying benefits and raises, and because new, less well paid workers can easily fill the rote jobs. "The relatively young age and little previous work experience of McDonald's crew members means that shouting is one of the main methods used by management to discipline staff...we've seen staff reduced to tears"(MacDougall 2003).
