Addendum to Personal Statement

Lawyers have the power to change the world directly by influencing judicial decisions. Those who work in constitutional law make it possible to transform the ways judiciaries function nationwide. Moreover, many attorneys at law become involved in politics, proving the powerful role that all law school graduates assume. I am poignantly aware of the enormous responsibilities I will earn when I graduate from law school. My degree is not just about me and my future career in a law firm. The degree I earn is a symbol of the potential I have to make our world a better place.

Intend to make the world a better place with my law degree by providing pro bono services to individuals in need including the destitute. Moreover, I intend to provide pro bono services to charitable organizations or social service groups that I believe in and support. Another way I intend to use my legal career to benefit others is by practicing law with ethics and integrity. I assure the admissions committee that I will never compromise my values for personal gain.

Benefiting the African-American community will require the services of lawyers like me who can create social change. Whether by representing victims of hate crimes or police brutality; or by prosecuting corporations who practice discrimination, I can make a difference. My presence in any firm will show also that people of color are becoming more visible in positions of power. It is entirely possible that after many years of service as an attorney I will channel my efforts more directly into politics, offering other African-American women a chance for their voices to be heard. When I am entrusted with the right to practice law in the United States, I will represent your institution to the best of my ability by giving back to my community and helping those in need.

With limited scholarship available scholarship awards promising past performance and invests in future promise. Therefore, a candidate's entire academic and social record should be taken into consideration when evaluating candidates. Letters of recommendation, applicant essays, and especially the interview can help a scholarship committee narrow down their search. Ultimately, though, scholarships should be given according to need. Students who most deserve scholarship awards are those who might benefit most from the financial relief. Therefore, if I were on a selection committee I would take into account the individual's financial situation.

Also, I would keep in mind that whoever receives the scholarship will represent the fund and the institution. The scholarship committee has an obligation to chose recipients from diverse backgrounds to increase the level of diversity in the legal professions. Also, recipients must be carefully chosen so that those who receive scholarships will support the institution throughout their career and represent that institution via honorable social service or career success. Detecting promise early in a student's career can be difficult. However, experienced admissions committees can sense which applicants offer the greatest potential.

Because I believe that academic records and resumes only offer a partial picture of an applicant's potential, I would rely strongly on their performance in interviews. If had the opportunity to ask the applicant questions, I would focus on the student's future goals. Their dreams might illuminate their character in ways a written track record cannot. Some students are shy or have trouble expressing themselves in writing. Therefore, an interview allows all applicants to share parts of themselves that might not be evident elsewhere in their application.

All alumni owe a certain degree of gratitude to the university that shaped their future careers, goals, values, and body of knowledge. Scholarship applicants are even more indebted to the institution and the specific fund that helped them get their head start. Faculty members dedicate their lives to helping students develop their talents regardless of whether or not those students were scholarship recipients or not. Students also have access to a wealth of information while at school that might not be available to them otherwise. Scholarship applicants should especially declare their appreciation for what their alma mater has done for them personally and professionally.
