In viewing the struggles endured by these pilgrims to pay their penance to God and in a sense, get closer to Christianity then they were able in the West, one is better able to understand the direct link between Christian life in any area of the world at this time and Christian practice. While today, so many individuals would look at the length of such a journey along with the trials that go with it and decide against taking it on, these pilgrims understood that this was the only way to fulfill their religion to the ultimate extent of which they knew how.
