"I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" is the movie chosen to discuss these questions, which are as under:
How the character is portrayed to schizophrenia in real life?
Whether the actions in the movie are correct with reality or if Schizophrenia is different than the movie?
DESCRIPTION OF THE DISEASE 'SCHIZOPHRENIA':
Schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis denoting a persistent, often chronic, mental illness variously affecting behavior, thinking, and emotion. The term schizophrenia comes from the Greek words ? (schizo, split or divide) and (frenos, mind) and is best translated "shattered mind." Psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin was first to make the distinction between what he called dementia praecox and other forms of madness. This classification was later renamed 'schizophrenia' by psychiatrist Eugene Bleuler as it became clear Kraeplin's name was not an adequate description of the conditions. More recently, it has been argued that schizophrenia is just one end of a spectrum of experience and behaviour, and everybody in society may have some such experiences in their life." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a mental disease, which give rise to distorted and complexed behavior. The term schizophrenia was derived and evaluated from the Greek words and since then it has been used to denote 'shattered mind' although the real causes and factors, which give, rise to schizophrenia are not evaluated by the psychiatrists as yet. But they say that schizophrenia is the result of genetic disorders and it includes both negative and positive symptoms. It is regarded as the disorder of the brain because a person acts abnormally due to the presence of the mental disorder known as schizophrenia which emerges due to the lack of interaction between thought processes and perception. The discontinuity of the thought processes and perception give rise to attitudes, which are not normal, and thus, a person in such condition suffers from such disease. Some people also say that the individuals suffering from schizophrenia possess split personalities but this concept is not worthy enough to belief because the individuals who suffer from such disorders do not possess split personalities in fact their actions, attitudes and behaviors are all due to the mental disorders of mind.
COMAPRISON OF SCHIZOPHRENIA IN THE MOVIES TO SCHIZOPHRENIA
IN REAL LIFE:
It has been observed that many filmmakers have also taken this subject to make movies based on schizophrenia. Amongst these films, the paper has chosen the movie never promised you a rose garden" in which a character of a girl named Deborah is described who was a 16-year-old Schizophrenic young Jewish girl, the story describes the events and circumstances, which were faced by this girl and the responses of this girl was shown in the movie. The movie has described the kind of attitudes and responses, which a patient of schizophrenia produces. The filmmaker has presented the views and opinions from Deborah's point-of-view and the audiences really gets into the situations and circumstances which Deborah faces.
The movie has presented her sickness, her stages of recovery and her conception of the world. The observation and analysis of the character shows that the disease, which is known as schizophrenia as pictured in the movie, is similar to the schizophrenia in real life. Practically speaking, a patient suffering from schizophrenia is unable to discriminate between the situations of real life and the situations of imagination. Such patients lack the ability to present their emotions and thoughts in front of others. They also behave abnormally in social situations. The movie has shown all these related aspects of schizophrenia, which are real, but the description of a fantasyland is unrealistic.
The researches states that schizophrenia occurs during the early ages of a child and during this age the friends and family members try to notice the abnormal behavior of child suffering from schizophrenia. The movie 'I never gave you a rose garden' show that Deborah's illness was detected and observed by her family members and friends and they decided to make treatments of this disease. The symptoms shows that often the person suffering from this disease gets tensed and he/she is unable to sleep properly. The efficiency and work performance of such individuals begins to deteriorate. Deborah, the protagonist of the movie also shows such signs in the movie, which are treated to real life symptoms of schizophrenia.
People suffering from schizophrenia have hallucinations and they start hearing different voices are unable to detect as to who is speaking and from where, Deborah also hears such hallucinations. According to the movie it can be observed that Deborah understood what actually the other people used to think about her illness or her attitudes, and the kind of treatment, which she received from others, also disturbed her a lot. The movie has shown the character of Deborah as a schizophrenic patient but the aspects, which are shown in the movie regarding schizophrenia, are somewhat different from the real life schizophrenia, its treatment and its cure. The movie has presented the character of Deborah who always dreams of her imaginary world of fantasy and she assumes herself to be the part of this world. In fact, the story has given much importance to the imaginary world, which Deborah assumes, and least importance to the causes of schizophrenia.
The actions in this movie are not hundred percent in compliance with the real life schizophrenia. The treatments of schizophrenia in real life are different from the treatments, which the movie has shown. The story has decribed.the devotion of young woman towards childhood fantasy while actual schizophrenic patients are not involved to the imaginary world of their own to such an extent as Deborah. The patients in real life although suffers from mental disorders but they are not sticked to their own imaginary world of fantasy. And, finally Deborah gets out of this situation with the help of a psychiatrist.
