How can you as a leader encourage more men and women to mentor others?
Mentorship is valuable tool to improve corporate performance while also improving employee outcomes. Research has shown the mentorship lowers turnover and helps improve engagement at the corporate level. Higher employee engagement is very beneficial for an organization as it allows to retain a larger portion of its labor capital within the business. By doing so, the company can better maintain its culture while also help to improve overall strategic outcomes for the organization. This is particularly relevant given the vast technology focus that many companies are embracing. Due to this, the workforce must be highly educated and have a capacity to quickly change strategic behaviors when warranted. Mentorship helps to accomplish these objectives
To encourage mentorship, it is important to establish open lines of communication and collaboration within the department. The ability to work with one another and observe tendencies within a group dynamic is a critical element towards achieving a baseline level of comfort. Here, team mates can better ascertain the skills and abilities of each member and how their background can help improve them. Through these experiences, is much easier to establish an close mentorship relationship as each member is very familiar with the other, their abilities, strengths and weakness. Through prior collaboration these relationships can become much more effective at changing behaviors to become much more seamless.
In addition, the leader should look to reward and support mentoring and collaboration within the group. Here, leaders could go so far as to have mentorship as a determinant for yearly bonus compensation or merit increases. By establishing its importance, leaders are better able to encourage behaviors that are much more mentorship centric from their team members (Athey, 2000).
