Proposal Outline: Trauma-Informed Education: Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Migrant Students in Schools

I. Chapter One - Introduction

This dissertation aligns with the Health and Wellness pillar focusing on the mental health and well-being of marginalized populations, specifically migrant students, within educational systems.

2. Background of the Study

A. Many of these students have suffered trauma due to war and unstable conditions.

B. Current school systems often fail to address migrant students' mental health needs.

C. Teachers and school systems lack trauma-informed frameworks that are culturally responsive and adequately designed to support migrant students (Midgette & González, 2023).

3. Statement of the Problem

Current school is ill-equipped to address the trauma-related mental health needs of migrant students. There is a substantial gap in the implementation of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.

4. Purpose of the Study

A. Develop a trauma-informed educational framework that addresses the mental health needs of migrant students.

5. Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to the literature on trauma-informed education and provide practical tools for educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals working with migrant students.

6. Definitions of Terms

A. Trauma-Informed Education: An educational approach that recognizes and responds to the impact of traumatic experiences on students' learning and behavior.

B. Culturally Responsive Practices: Educational practices that recognize and honor students' cultural backgrounds and use that knowledge to create supportive learning environments.

7. Theoretical Framework

Transformative Theory emphasizes the power of education in fostering personal and social change, particularly for marginalized groups (Cranton, 2016). CRT provides a lens to examine how systemic inequalities and racism affect migrant students’ experiences in schools (Busey et al., 2023).

8. Research Questions

A. How do current educational practices address the trauma-related mental health needs of migrant students?

B. What are the gaps in existing trauma-informed practices in schools?

C. How can culturally responsive, trauma-informed practices be integrated into educational frameworks to support resilience and healing for migrant students?

9. Limitations

A. The study will be limited by the availability of participants, as migrant populations may be transient.

B. The qualitative nature of the study may not allow for generalization of results to all migrant students in different contexts.

10. Delimitations

A. The study will focus on schools in urban areas with high migrant populations.

B. The research will concentrate on students who have experienced significant trauma due to forced displacement.

11. Assumptions

A. Participants will provide honest and accurate responses in interviews and focus groups.

B. Migrant students’ experiences of trauma are varied, but common themes such as displacement, violence, and poverty will emerge.

III. Chapter Three - Methodology

This study will be conducted in my school, the primary setting for data collection to explore how teacher perceptions on the school’s ability to help the mental health needs of migrant students.

2. Participants of the Study

The study will involve migrant students who have experienced trauma, their families, teachers, school counselors, and administrators.

3. Instrumentation

A. Semi-structured interviews will be used to collect individual experiences and perspectives.
