Therefore, professionals in public administration possess a wide range of skills and experiences that enable them to serve the public efficiently and effectively. The process of becoming a professional in public administration not only entails completing relevant academic programs but also involves working in different settings to gain the necessary experience for success in the field. I believe that military service provides the necessary experience for a successful career in the field of public administration.
As a result, I have engaged in military service to help prepare me for a successful career in public service. I have been in the military for 6 years and I work with contractors and government employees, and engineers. I currently work at Naval Facilities Engineering Command with over 300 government employees and over 100 contractors. Being in the military has provided me with insights into what public service work entails.
First, through working with government employees, I have learned what public service basically entails in terms of personnel management. In this regard, one of the insights obtained from military service that is relevant to public service is personnel management. My role in military service has involved working with different army men and government employees. Through this, I have engaged in different aspects of personnel management and developed the requisite skills for a successful career in public service. From this experience, I have learned that personnel management in public service involves managing human resources in a manner that generates greater output at the least possible costs. The government employees that I collaborate and work with are always interested in creating greater outputs for society at the least possible costs. When making decisions, they always evaluate the outputs of certain measures in relation to costs. Through this, I have learned that personnel management and work in public service should focus on generating the greater good for the public at minimal costs. Public servants should address public needs and demands by identifying the most suitable cost-effective way. Personnel recruitment and management in public service is not simply about clustering jobs but entails determining the significance of the jobs in relation to the public service need and the costs involved in service delivery.
